Hello everyone!!

just thought I would join to learn and hopefully understand my beautiful birds.

My journey into become a parrot owner started roughly 10 months ago. a friend of ours needed some one to watch "Lucy" while he went out of town for a couple of weeks for family reasons....well 10 months later we still have her and she has become part of the family. Lucy was shy at first and has warmed up and now has free roam of the house. to tell yall a little about our house hold we have a full house. we currently have a house full...It's me and my husband my 3 children 1 granddaughter, 4 little dogs, 1 cat and now 2 birds. Needless to say I have my hands full :), but I love every minute of it. We received Rocky yesterday, the lady that had her was unable to do what was needed to properly care for her and give her the time and affection that was needed. so I now have a very scared bird that is very aggressive. can't touch her or even walk up to her cage with out her lunging towards us. so my journey begins trying to gain her trust and hopefully make her a happy bird like Lucy. so I will have a lot of questions and hopefully here I can get some answers to some of my questions.

looking forward to Happy Birds!!

Welcome to the Parrot Forum!

Please take the time to find and read the Amazon Forum! The place where Amazon owners and lovers of Amazons communicate with each other and share stores of life with Amazons. Please take the time to read the first Thread of the Amazon Forum regarding understanding Amazon Body Language. The best way of learning Amazon Body Language is to set a chair along side your new Amazon's cage and read the Amazon Body Language Thread 'aloud.' The best results come from doing this multiple times each day until you understand the Language and your new Amazon is more comfortable with you. This should be done by each individual in your family that wants to develop a working relationship with either Amazon.

With yet another Amazon in your home, it would be a good idea to keep them separated for a least a month. It is just good health practice. It would also be a very good idea have your Amazons visit a Avian Vet in the near future. As part of the Avian Vet visit, please assure that they have a full spectrum blood test and also a DNA sex test.

Please watch the interaction of both of your Amazons. It is just as likely as not, that they will not get a long with each other. This supports keeping them separate for the first 30 days.

Once again, welcome to the Parrot Forums and especially the Amazon Forum!

Welcome! Sailboat gave you good advise.

And while it often times requires patience, aggressive anti-social birds can frequently turn around.

My aggressive and antisocial macaw is currently napping on my knee.

Hello and welcome! I am so glad your friend chose you to watch Lucy with the way things worked out, and it sounds like she has fit right into your family. I have faith that with some patience and love, that Rocky will also settle in and begin to trust.
I am so happy you joined us, and we have plenty of very knowledgeable Amazon people here who are always wiling to help, like Sailboat, who provided some great info.
Looking forward to hearing more about Lucy, Rocky and the rest of your crew:)

A warm welcome to you and your incredible menagerie!

Great advice given!! Finding a method of safeguarding the Amazons from the dogs and cat must be a challenge!!
