Hey everyone,
I was wondering if any of you have any goals you set with your birds that you'd like to share. Whether it be spending more time with them, socializing them better or teaching them tricks.
Cliche I know...LOL!
We rescue adopted 2 cockatiels back in August, both of them are about 3 years old and from what I understand they WERE hand tame at one time, but they certainly haven't shown it since we've had them. It's safe to say, they were completely terrified of human contact.
I have no idea what happened to them to make them so afraid but in the 4 short months we've had them, they've both come a LONG way. However they are still not willing to be handled, AT ALL! When I open their cage doors, they come out on their own, that was a stepping stone, sometimes they'll fly down to our bed where I have treats and toys to intice them. Best of all, they don't scream that blood curling scream as if they were being attacked when I pick them up to put them back in their cages. It always takes several minutes of herding them onto my hand and cupping above their backs to deter flying off before I get them back in their cages without having to towel them, but they aren't screaming about it anymore. (their wings are clipped but they can still flutter across the room)
So my goal for this year is to get each of them stepping up on my hand.
My other goal is to get our conure Franklin to accept and wear his flight suit. The little bugger absolutely LOVES to go bye bye with me, but now that he's learned to fly, I won't take him out until he wears his flight suit.
I just want to tell him, "Put your flight suit on and we'll go bye bye" and have him jump right in it. Yeah...that's my ULTIMATE 2012 Bird Goal!
What's yours??
Toni
