normally nut leaves her toys be, other then the kabob chew thing she shreds every now an again?

well other day son was on the floor playing with his geo-mag toy, and she flew to the floor next to him, and as a rule she wont go to the floor, watched what he was doing and then promptly flew of with one of the red rubber/plastic slightly bendy tubes, its about 5inches long, it has a magnet either side, when she got it back to her cage, she was a tad surprised it stuck onto it, and spent a considerable amount of time trying to un-stick one end then the other

i did keep a close eye on her so she didn't shred rubber coating, but other then squeezing tube with her beak and trying to keep both ends from sticking to the cage, she seems to really enjoy this toy??
as she saw it on floor today and flew down and promptly got it!

are there similar parrot toys like this, also is it safe for her to continue playing with this one??

I can just imagine how cute that must have been! You should have grabbed your camera. :D

I cant say if a magnet is safe to play with, I am really not sure. Magnets are made from a rock called magnetite. A bar magnet is made up of tiny bar magnets, they are called magnetic domains. Magnetic domains only exist in special kinds of metals such as iron, nickle and colbalt.

Now that scares the living daylights out of me. The three heavy metals which commonly poison birds are lead, zinc, and iron. My girl had metal poisoning so I've been reading about it A LOT. If a magnet gets stuck to your bird cage or any toys then it means it is coated with zinc or something toxic.

Please take some time and read up about Metal Poisoning and the symptoms. Here is some websites but there are plenty if you google it.

eeek i always thoguht magnets stuck to stainless steel?? i am going to assume her cage is that but with a coating :( not happy that her cage coating may conatin zinc grrrr

copy from geomag:-
Geomag primarily uses polypropylene for the manufacture of its products. The polypropylene material due to its resistance to ensure durability and brilliance of its colors.
i've read up on this and as far as i know i think most toys be made of this and its non toxic?

the magnets look stainless steel, so i think its that with a magnetic charge

and yes she does have a habit of licking anything metal :(

its amazing how hazards there are for a bird! well at the moment she is pushing the bar/tube to top of her cage and then trying to lift whole bar up, but her head will bob to left or right, as magnet gets close to cage :) its almost like she's having a wieghts session at the gym

Never take for granted that toy manufactures have our birds health in mind. They are in it for the money and most will use anything that is cheaper than stainless steel but looks the same.

Unfortunately it is not stainless steel and I honestly do not know if magnets are birds safe or not. The best way to go is - if you are in doubt then it is not safe.;)

There's no doubt in my mind that Tiki's cage, (second hand cage, second hand bird) is plain steel with a powder baked coating on it. I think it's fine as long as the coating is good and intact, but there is any signs of rust, out the cage goes. If a cage was made primarily out of stainless steel, it would cost a small fortune, considerably more then $200-$300.00. I think this cage new retails for around $150-$200.00 depending on where you get it.

MIke:confused:

I dont think any of our cages are pure stainless steel, I wish we were that rich.:D Is that the impression I gave?

Your cage looks like it is powder coated?

definately better get nut another toy!! but it was funny watching her creeping around my son for it, and when she got it, he went to take it from her an promptly got a nip, he came over to show me the dents and i heard her drop tube, and she flew onto his shoulder looked me strait in the eye with her stretched neck look and flew off!!! on to top of her cage and then started to preen!! :)

i wonder if she was protesting her innocence???

i just told my son it was her way of saying sorry??? and he was happy with that, then he waved a treat at her to come on, and she did the head tilt an he pottered of to her an gave her treat! i think she has trained him well!! :) bless there like 2 siblings what ever my son plays with, she shows great interest with, to the point of trying to drag his X box controller to a safe chew spot!!
he now puts his toys away!

i am planning to threaten him with setting her loose in his room next??? JJ :)
