Parrots
indian ring neck parakeet
we purchased a ring neck about 6 weeks ago now,he is now 7/8 months old. he was from an aviary.
he comes out and flies round although needs coaxing back in quite a bit.he is very scared of any hands near him and anyone going near him he flies to the other side of the cage. he is trying to say things now and then but shrieks rather than whistles any tune.
i was just wondering how we go about getting more used to us.and eventually come on to our hands.
and is it just persistent talking to him will get him to talk.
do mirrors help? as i have heard yes they are good AND no never use them.so i am a little confused.
to be honest i am a novice although had a cockateil from a friend a few years back that was already trained, but this baby is a new ball game.
all help and advice accepted:blue1:

Hello and welcome to the forum:)

Give him a couple of Weeks to settle in a get used to both you and his new surroundings!

Keep talking to him and offering him treats.. You could also try to get him to step up onto a stick, rather than your hand for now!

Make sure you provide him with plenty of Toys to occupy him.. Swings seem to be most Birds favourite... Yes, a Mirror could be a good choice too:)

Offer him plenty of Fruit and Veggies too.

Do stick and clicker training, give a treat every time you enter or leave the room (he will associate you with yummy treats- worked great for getting my dogs and parrots to trust my hubby), and slightly clip his wings if need be til you have him handable.

I'd recommend no to mirrors because birds can form an unhealthy relationship with mirrors, and this may in turn lead to aggression later down the road.

Before clipping him, I'd recommend to start out the morning by feeding him. Feed him enough food for one day, and first thing in the morning, feed him either treats (millet, sunflower seeds, safflower seeds) or his regular food by hand. Don't chase him around, just offer it to him and hope he comes the rest of the way to your hand. It may take a few days of doing this before he decides to come on over, so don't fret. Either way, if he's not interested, replace his regular food and try again the next day.

Likewise, when he's out, try and make sure you have food near you that's available to him. In this way, food is only inside his cage or with you.

When you need to get him to go back in, try and make the room darker and put favorite foods inside the cage.
