Hello My name is Lizza. I'm an older woman with arthritis. That's just to get you to laughing! I have a brand new Amazon parrot. It was either me take or let some young uncontrolled teenager throw it outside. No one was stopping him I gather his "singing" was too much too handle now that he got his new kitten. HMMM. Well I also have two golden retrievers--large ones. First off he's in cage that I think might just be too small. I got my leather gloves ready and a huge (sort of) stick for him to hop on to let him out. Now he needs some kind of stick to sit on at the top of his cage. I read grape sticks are good? OMG I have seen one parrot in my life! From what I've been told only I'm gathering he's around 13. He apparently had a good home but the woman passed on. I believe he's very safe where I have him. I don't believe safe is all he needs! I can let him out. He's in the main living room that has a closeable door. Right now he's in a partition I have made. The dogs are unable to get to the cage. I will not allow the dogs in when I bring him out. OKAY I need all the hints. I can't just leave this poor thing in his? cage all the time. His name is Henry Hank. But he says Hi Ethel. I haven't heard much else yet. But I'm sure he's scared too death being moved here, been only 2 days now. So, I'm not even sure if I'm really able to keep him or If I need to find him a new home. So far, from photos I have seen he might be a double yellow headed Amazon parrot. He has almost whole head of yellow..Red on wings and blue further down. He's quite beautiful. Oh I'm not very healthy. I worry that it will just get attached then I will also pass on. So any advise please? Thanks so much..And I'm sure if he could Henry Hank would thank you!:greenyellow:

Hello I'm in Indiana USA I'm feeling so overwhelmed! Wow...I've followed only a few links so far. I do feed my dogs only homemade diets. I see there is a list for a parrot also! I also see the toxic list! That one scares me! Can't even light a scented candle? I put lavender oil on one of my dogs for a skin problem. I'm so hoping that isn't hurting Henry Hank! OH MY! AND thank you both for your replies and links! I have many neighbors with maples. Surely one or two could spare a bigger branch than my grapes! I lost all my trees to the frigid cold over the last 2 winters. They were newer as my older trees got diseased and died. I'm betting I must need to edit my profile as I see many of your homes show up!

Hello Lizza! A warm welcome to you and Henry Hank! I enjoyed reading your intro!

You did a very kind thing by helping Double H, I'm sure he appreciates it more than he can say. Taking in a parrot is understandably scary at first. Don't sell yourself short, you found a bird that needed help and you found this forum, you and Henry Hank will do just fine.

Feel free to ask any questions you need answered.

We'd love to see photos of your new companion.

Here's a couple of links to the Amazon and the Diet section.

And just in case you want to introduce your Golden Retrievers, we'd love to hear more about them too.

Hello and welcome to you and Henry Hank! Bless you for saving him! There is a wealth of information here on the forum...you've come to the right place! Can't wait to see pics! Patience is key and try to remain calm (even when you don't feel it..lol). Amazons are awesome and I'm sure Henry Hank will settle in in no time! With my Amazon, I let her out of the cage every day at the same time in the evening. She is very food motivated so I would let her see me put her favorite treat in her bowl, and she would go back in herself and I would shut the cage for the night. She was not handle-able when we got her (we had many bites trying). It took her 2 months to come to me, and she has been great ever since (with me anyway...not always hubby). Their body language is pretty easy to read. They can be stubborn and try to get their own way all the time...you have to show them that you are the flock leader...not them. You will do great with him!

Any questions...ask away...so may helpful people here!

Hellooo and welcome to this wonderful forum!

September 5th I adopted my first Amazon, a yellow naped..she is such a joy!

I had a lot of your same feelings when I was asked to take her. My emotions went nuts! Now that DeRita is home, I can't imagine life without her.

I can't wait to see pictures of Henry Hank so head on over to the Amazon forum and post away!

Tons of excellent information over there too!

Welcome aboard!

Toni
