HI, on Monday I will be adopting a 4 year old sun conure. I already have 2 sun conures which are approximately 2-3 years old now. The new sun conure comes from a home where he was never handled or lived inside the house. He stayed in his cage outside in the backyard.

I am wondering what my birds are going to react when there is another bird with them. Right now I am thinking they will have to share the same cage as I don't have a spare at the moment. My birds are extremely affectionate and I bathe them by hand.

WHat should I look out for when introducing the new conure to my current birds? any tips are welcome, thanks.:orange::orange::orange:

First off you need to quarantine for at least 30 days, so another cage is a must.

Another cage in a different section of the house is needed to watch the behavior of your new bird to see if it has any illnesses that could possibly harm your existing birds.

Oh okay I'll do that for 30 days and keep this thread updated, thanks guys.

Okay make sure you keep your hands clean between birds. And a vet checkup would be good too.

try to take them out and get them used to each other before putting them in the same cage also supervise them whenever they meet each other

It should be quarantined in a completely different air space.. You should shower and change clothes between the handlings... If you don't do all of these things, quarantining for illnesses is a wasted effort...

You don't want to go through what I just went through. My vet had told me it was probably safe to bring home a bird in it's 20s from a private home that hadn't been exposed to new birds in a couple of decades, when I got Pete. And everything was fine. So I thought the same about adding Merlin. However, Merlin was shipped to me and caught an infection in one of the airports or on the plane. And she passed it to Pete through the air. So now I had 2 sick birds and more than $600 in vet bills.

Quarantine the new bird at least 30 days. Feed it last, clean it's cage last and handle it last. And to be safest, yes, you should shower and change clothes and shoes before going near your existing birds.

I won't be handling it for the first month because I know it will just try to get away. I'll keep a close eye on :orange: and report back to you guys for updates. Thanks to all.

Well, I would handle the new bird. You need to bond with it. But, play with your other birds first, then go play with the new one. Then shower.
