Hi everyone! i just got a new ringneck who wasn't hand fed. im trying to tame and train him/her (Midori), Midori does allow us to handle her for a bit before trying to fly off. We've clipped her wings so she doesnt fly anymore but kind of plops onto the ground. she honks at us when we try to get her and always stays at the top of her cage. She's around 6 months and we've had her for about two weeks. Any tips? Oh she doesn't bite us, she kind of gently puts her beak on us but doesnt clamp down.

Be REALLY patient, and read as much as you can about IRNs. I am new to them myself, and it is a learning process. Try to interact with her as much as you can in ways other than holding. I suggest getting a play stand and a t stand. Let her just watch tv with you, start target training, IRNs are very smart, and easily bored!

Also, have you read about bluffing? If she is honking at you when you try to "get her" you may be scaring her, and scary people are not people you want to hang out with.

I recently wrote a blog post about bonding/taming/trust building with parrots, and it was mostly based on my experiences with my parent raised IRN Meg. I suggest you give it a read! :)

(I guess the thing about spending some time in the room, perhaps eating, and letting the bird come to you, could work with a clipped bird too - but it's so much easier with a fully flighted cutie!)

Talk to him/her a lot and be patient and consistent! That's is honestly the best advice I've ever gotten.

Patience is definitely the key.IRNs are very smart birds, so they train easily.. I find that they are very food motivated, which helps with training. I'm on my second one and I think they are great birds.. Best of luck!
