New perch and ladder

Well, we decided we needed to get some more perches for Bacca since we're tired of moving them around from room to room. I built this one for my office. It's made of poplar (other than the base which is a melamine shelf panel). It will get a second dish as soon as they're back in stock at the local pet store. Bacca has taken to it well. She likes she sits closer to the action (the other ones we had were a lot shorter).

I also built the ladder primarily so she could climb up and down from her cage. But she likes to play with it on the perch as well.

Construction was easy and took just a few hours.

The construction is:

All the parts (except the food cup) comes from Lowe's
2x2 x 36" poplar block (really only 1.5x1.5).
1" poplar dowel
Small piece of poplar scrap for the cup holder support.
1 melamine shelf.

I cut a rabbet in the top of the post to mount the cup holder
I drilled a hole for the dowel nearly all the way through the post. It friction fits but I added a little yellow glue.
I drilled and countersunk two holes in the base and then used course thread screws up through the base into the post.

The ladder is 2 pieces of 1x poplar ripped down to about 3/4". I then cut up two 1/2" x 48" dowels into 4" sections. I temporarily screwed the two rails together while I drilled holes every two inches. I then assembled it. This was such a tight fit I didn't bother with glue. After building this, it seemed like Bacca would like to use it to get up and down the perch so I drilled two 1" holes center on the range to make two half circles to lean the ladder on the perch dowel.
