Rick, my green cheek conure
Hello,

I am new to the site. I have a green cheek conure named Rick, and he turned 2 years old in June. I've had him for 2 years as of October and I love him more than I thought I could. I found this website because I was looking for help in giving oral medication. He has some abnormalities and they want me to give him meds. Little did I know, it wasn't going to be very easy and after 2 days he wont even come to me anymore. I miss my birdy cuddles, but I want him to get better. Any help is much appreciated...:green1:

Hello! Welcome to you and Rick!

If Rick is seriously opposed to taking the liquid meds, it's better to get it over with as quickly and efficiently as possible. Here's a few tips. Take Rick to a room he is not so familiar with, dim the lights, that will help calm him, wrap him in a soft towel, hold him on his back, grasp his face with your thumb and forefinger. Place the tip of the syringe at the back of the tongue but be careful not to push it back too far, squeeze slowly so the medicine is swallowed steadily not gulped. It's really safer to put the tip of the syringe across the tongue so that the opening is to the side rather than at the throat. As soon as the medicine is gone, take Rick back to his comfort zone and give him a treat and do something he likes. Necessary unpleasantness but Rick will forgive you. I'm sure there are other methods but that's the one I use for meds and exams.

I hope Rick recovers quickly.
