I just got a IRN problem child. I knew he wasnt tame but didnt know he was a plucker till I got to the ladies house.

He has been climbing all over the cage and giving out some loud squawks. I know they need to decompress for some time but its hard for me to sit here and just watch him go stir crazy. He is 6-7 years old, yellow with a plucked tail, all other feathering looks good.

Any help or advice would be helpful.

Thank you in advance!!

Hi welcome, gorgeous bird!
Since it's just the tail plucked, he probably needs to see the Avain veterinarian, as he night have a yeast infection or bacterial infection, or some health issues causing him to pluck that area. . It's an atypical first time pluck zone. So it makes me very suspicious of a health issue
More perches and the back of the cage against a wall may help him feel more secure.

Are you sure his tail was plucked? If all other feathers are good, possibly his tail feathers were just damaged in the cage, or pulled out if someone tried to catch him.(and doesn't want to admit) The tail really isn't a typical place to start plucking unless there's some underlying cause. Tail feathers by design come out easily as a protection from predators. Ring necks have really long tails that damage easily in crowded spaces. Definitely check with a CAV, and look for the reason his tail is gone.

I agree with all said above! Are there any other places he’s plucked himself? If not, then seeing a CAV would be your best option. Ringnecks don’t often pluck their tails and if they do (I’m doubtful), it wouldn’t be the first place they start at.

How big is his cage? Cages need be ATLEAST twice as big as the bird. The bigger, the better.
What is his current diet? Was he hand fed or parent fed? Was he ever tame as some point?

Also, it may take a long time for him to calm down. Birds move in slow-motion...Is he flighted?
Try to just interact passively for now---doing quiet things where he can see you and allowing him to adjust to your routine and the sound of your voice. You could try reading to him from a few feet away, but don't get too crazy with eye-contact, volume, proximity or contact.

I did go out after the video and get more toys, each one with a bell on it. I also find out he loves almonds and is quiet for now. I know it takes time and determiniation. He's mine now and I will help him. :)

Looks more comfortable. Definitely need to add some more short perches, abd save up for larger cage. :) He really is beautiful, and I hope you will help him have a much better life!
