Bula! I live on the beautiful Garden Island of Fiji, Taveuni. Four and a half years ago i was given a baby Taveuni Parakeet. Not having access to cages, watering bottles, vets or bird food, i raised him like everybody else around raise theirs--with oatmeal and rice and fruit, roti, vegetabkes, soaked nuts, seeds etc. I had a cage made and kept him for one year. His color came in, he was healthy and cheeky and one day he flew away. There are lots of parrots in the coconut trees and he survived with them. He even survived several cyclones! About a month ago a boy captured a parrot on my lawn. I put him in the bathroom and started talking to him. He listened and remained suprisingly close to me. I thought he was a previously domesticated bird. He was eating alot and eating off a spoon. I put his cage in the living room and he went inside-seemed very happy so i believe it is the same bird. He does not remember to step up or come or eat off my plate or land on my head when he is out of the cage but he sticks his neck and head out of the cage holes and holds onto my finger or something with his beak and fluffs his head and neck feathers and spreads his wings and tail feathers which are the most beautiful combination of blues and greens. At that time he will let me rub his beak and top of his head and i do it until i get tired of it and walk away but he is still showing me his stuff. I think i should let him go to be with the other parrots but my husband says just keep him in the cage...

Borut & Helena Happy to have you both here with us. It is so so interesting to chat in cyber with people all over the world. Parrots are parrots though it does not matter where they live. Please share with us how it is to have a Macaw -- your joys and funny times.

Pryia welcome. Sounds like you live in paradise. Very nice story about the bird you had and how you think this wild bird is the same one. I bet it is. could you have a cage outside for him on a porch and keep it open? That was you could visit with the bird and feed the bird and it would still be able to fly free?

im kyle 30 from northern ireland ive a 19 week old b&g macaw and an alexandrine. buying a harlequin macaw after x mas,

Hello All,
I just joined today and would like to introduce myself. My name is Nicky but go by MsKiKi I live in Adelaide South Australia and am a great lover of all animals. I have had many birds over the years all of which were budgies until about 15 years ago when I bought a hand-raised baby Gal ah whom I christened Floyd, seemed rather apt as he was a dark pink and grey and I'm such a HUGE! fan of 'Pink Floyd'. My daughter was looking after him for me while I was confined to bed with a back injury and sadly my little grand daughter managed to get to the cage door while the sliding doors to the back garden were open and he flew away. Although that happened many years ago I still miss him so much, I had taught him to talk and whistle many tunes and he had picked up many other different sounds along the way. He was such a character and filled my days with joy.

After Floyd I went back to having budgies again but the past few years I had often thought of getting a Cockatiel and mentioned this to the family. For Mothers Day this year my daughter and son-in-law bought me a beautiful 10 week old baby hand-raised Cockatiel whom I have named Cookie. I don't know if he is a he, from everything I have read he seems to have some characteristics that are both male and female and never having had a cockatiel before I am finding it very confusing to work out which is which.

My brood now consist of the following.

1. Husband.
2. Daughters.
2. Grandsons.
4. Granddaughters.
1. Great Grandson.
1. Budgie.
1. Cockatiel.
1. Dog.

I'm also seriously contemplating getting another Parrot, am I mad or what? I keep telling myself it's just old age dementia setting in. :D

Hi MsKiki and welcome to the forum, are you crazy for wanting to get another parrot?, probably not, if your contemplating another Galah, I might have to re-think that answer ;), I happen to be doubly blessed/cursed having two myself....lol, have a look around get to know other members, have fun and please enjoy your stay :)

BTW love the quote in your signature :)

:D No Bobby I think I will give the Galah a miss this time. I have been reading up on what parrots are compatible with the two birds I already have and so far I am leaning towards the Electrus or Regent. I do have to admit though I would really love to get a Quaker but apparently they wouldn't go well with Cookie and Bluey (the budgie).

I am looking forward to getting to know some of the members and have no doubt I will enjoy my stay. :)

Thank you Spiritbird it's great to be here. We are very lucky here in Australia we have some amazing wild life for sure. :)

I posted my own thread to introduce myself, but I just wanted to post here as well. I'm Ali (as in Ally not Ah-lee) and I'm a soon-to-be guardian of a baby Blue-Fronted Amazon (dying of excitement and anticipation).

I just wanted to say that I absolutely love the community here! Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. There's no harshness or judgmental comments and everyone just seems genuinely happy to help each other out and have fun. Unfortunately it seems that this isn't common for bird forums (or any pet forums). Other forums seem to be full of people who think they are the only ones on Earth capable of looking after pets and insist on telling people they shouldn't have them, rather than helping them out or offering advice.

So, yeah, just wanted to say that I love this forum and I intend to stick around =]

I joined a couple of weeks back! I haven't been able to log on as often as I would like but I appreciate the content on the site. The main contributors definitely know a lot about birds and I believe I will be able to enhance the quality of life for my own flock, from what I am learning here.
My wife and I have an eclectic collection of birds. This creates an interesting cast of characters that add a lot of dimension to our lives.
I have raised birds since I was a kid and my wife is an animal lover in general that enjoys the birds as much as I do.
We have 14 different species that include a B&G Macaw, DYH Amazon, Congos, Timnehs, Pionus (three species), Brown-necks, Meyers etc. We have two bird rooms, one for our breeders and the other for our pet birds, plus an aviary in the back yard. In our aviary we have Princess of Wales, Rock Pebblers, Cockatiels and Lineolated Parakeets.

Speaking of which, it is a beautiful day today and I am going to spend some time with the aviary birds right now. Always lots to do!

Thanks for a great place to meet and chat about birds!

My name is DeeJay. I'm 25 and live in Southern Ohio. I'm an Assistant General Manager of a Holiday Inn Express. I have a 6yr. old female pug and a 6month old umbrella cockatoo. I haven't had a bird for 5-7 years and I've been really wanting to get another one. I've had cockatiels & a bare eyed cockatoo before. After I lost my first cockatiel which was my first pet ever, it was really hard for me to have birds. I was so attached to her and when I lost her I couldn't do it anymore. Her name was Peaches. I remember the very first time I seen her on xmas. I feel in love with the umbrella at the petstore and decided he was the one. I'm just waiting for them to let me take him home, they want to keep him an extra week to handfeed him. I'm so excited to get him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
