Zephyr - turquoise Indian ringneck.
Hi,

I just joined today. I adopted a turquoise Indian ringneck on Saturday (hatched 3-1-18). I am somewhat familiar with parrots as my sister used to own a jenday conure.

I currently have a large travel cage for Zephyr, but I am needing a home cage obviously. There are so many different ones out there, so if anyone can guide me to maybe a specific one that is good for ringnecks, I'd appreciate it. I do know the cage size requirements and bar spacing. I know some cages are easier to deal with than others.

I will look for the threads for ringnecks as well.

Thank you!

Welcome and congrats on your new ringneck!

Welcome!

Always buy the absolute largest cage you can afford!!! I don't know what cage "size requirements" you have or where you found them, but just an FYI, those always tend to be much too small for the bird that they are meant for, meaning that they are typically the absolute minimum cage size for that species, not actually the size of cage that will be good for the species...A good rule of thumb with cage sizes (besides buying the largest one you can afford/find) is that you should take that minimum cage size that you found and then at the very least double it...Parrots have the intelligence of a 4-5 year old child, and as such they don't generally like being inside of their cages much at all, but they can get used to them, and even learn to like them, but only IF they have a ton of room to walk/climb/fly around in, AND HAVE A TON OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF TOYS AT ALL TIMES TO KEEP THEM OCCUPIED, BUSY, AND THINKING!!! Please make sure that you have room inside whatever cage you buy for your IRN for at least 6-10 different toys at the same time, and then you need to go and buy between 6-10 toys, more is better, as they do get bored with them quickly, and they should be switched-out at least once every month...this will keep your bird happy, occupied, and prevent them from getting bored, starting to scream, self-mutilate, etc.

Also, if all you have right now is a "travel cage", even a large one, please, until you get him a nice, large, proper cage with a ton of toys inside it, please make sure that he's not spending much time in the travel cage (I'm assuming there aren't toys in the travel-cage, or at least not many, just due to lack of space)...

Welcome to the forum, and please don't hesitate to ask any questions that you have!

Absolutely the biggest cage you can afford...just don't forget to budget in the rest.
This is our families go to cage...
Avi One 603 Parrot Cage
The boys share one. The tiel and the lovie each have their own....go figure. They IRN's initally didn't, it was one each, but they moved in together on their own accord. However, they're rarely shut inside during the day. We have multiple stands around the house, and harnesses for getting out and about. We've spent an 'Idon'twanttoadditup' amount on forraging toys too. Cage size is critical, but it's not the only consideration when considering the budget for what will make your IRN's day worthwhile :)I can't wait to see photo's!

Welcome Brooke and Zephyr! With luck you'll have a full-service pet shop with lots of bird cages for comparison. If not, you can find many terrific cages online, just be sure to dig into the details and read as many reviews as possible.

Thank you so far for the suggestions.

The size I read somewhere was minimum 24"x24"x36" and even though I'll have Zephyr out a lot and even outside to hikes, pet ok stores, parks ete I'd prolly like bigger cause I don't think that size would let stretch wings and tail good enough, and also the space for toys. My budget isn't to low either, but my main decision will be Biggest I can fit in house lol.

The only pet store in town are pet smart and Petco...So not the greatest selection. Next best maybe 2hr drive. Prolly gonna buy online and like you said to read reviews and all.

On a side note - how do I add pics to a post or is it just a separate place for that? The lil button I see here is for adding a web link.

Thanks all!

I ditto the flight cages and have an ARN in a 32x21x35 HQ flight cage.

Petco *DOES* have the mink brown cage which is 30x30, and occasionally goes on sale for $180-$220, and may be cheaper with a coupon.

As far as uploading images, you can host them on another site or upload them through the advanced options. :)
