The Netherlands (Europe)
Parrots
Illiger macaw named Rio and a Military macaw named Maui.
Hello everybody,

My name is Christa and I'm a new member of this forum. First of all english is not my native language so probably there will be some (or a lot :52:) mistakes in my posts. Sorry for that.
I'm 46 years old and live in the Netherlands in Europe with my husband and daughter. She is 16.
My daughter and I are both real macaw-lovers. We have two macaws. The first one is Rio. She is al mini-macaw (illiger). We have had her since she was 10 weeks old. She is now 5 years and she is a real sweetheart. She is easy going and likes to be on her Java-tree in the living room and be around her (human) flock.
Our second macaw is Maui. She is a military macaw. We have had her since last November when she was 3 months old. She is now 1 year old and a real clown!
What a difference she is if I compare her with our easygoing Rio. If she is in the room you will know it! She loves to be with me or my daughter, is extreme curious and isn't afraid of anything. She is such a sweet, cuddling and funny macaw. And we are very busy to educate Maui what is allowed and what not. Every time I am astonished about the intelligence of Maui because she knows exactly what is allowed only sometimes she will do something that isn't allowed to get your attention. So that is real challenge to deal with that.
Rio and Maui are not the best friends. They tolerrate each other but can not be on the same tree.
I have already read a lot of posts on this forum and I love you stories. I learn a lot from them and I hope that I will learn al lot more because I want my macaws to have a happy life.

I have a question is it dangerous for the macs to cool the room where they stay by airco? Because the room where Rio and Maui stay when nobody is in the house, can get very warm during summer. I'm afraid they get ill because of the airco.

Hi Christa, welcome to the forum :). Both of your birds are gorgeous! Looking forward to seeing more about them. Glad you joined us!

Edit: My birds are in air conditioner too. It does get very hot in the house before I turn it on. If they are healthy and have good immune systems, it should be fine. I even have fans going, and the draft is like being in the outdoors. Mine are used to this though.

I'm so glad you joined us and I look forward to hearing more about your babies and seeing more pictures:)

Welcome to the forums, Christa! Your Rio and Maui are beauties! Thank you for the lovely intro and photos. Looking forward to getting to know the three of you.

Your air conditioning should be fine, the heat would probably be worse for them.

Thank you all again for welcoming me!

I'm glad that it is no problem to use the air conditioning. At this moments the temperature in the Netherlands is around 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) and especially Maui seems to have some problems with that temperature because she is such a busy macaw. She flies around the room all the time and doesn't find it easy to just sit and relax for a few minutes. :).

Maui flying in the house. Her tail is damaged because of her clumsiness when she started climbing and flying. Sometimes she just landed the wrong way and broke a tail feather. Luckily the tail feathers look a lot better nowadays.

I think I 'm a little clumsiness to ..... Because I don't know how to present the picture presented the right way :02:
