Hello to the other people our feathered friends have chosen to take on as pets. I though I would introduce ourselves, I am Chris, I got started with parrots by inheriting an aunts Umbrella Cockatoo, Buddy Girl. I only had her for 2 years before she passed on (she died at age 47), and it was a strange feeling to bury a "pet" that can look you in the eyes and say "I love you" then lean in to give you a kiss. She was buried beneath a rose bush, and needless to say...I was hooked(billed).

Fast forward some years, some bites, some actual arguing with a bird, and I am now owned by Rayna, a 10 year old Panama Amazon. Acapulco (Poco) a 25 year old Military Macaw, and Care Bear who is a 7 year old Goffin's Cockatoo.

I'm sure i will be on here lots, asking whatever questions i think of at 3am, and posting pictures for that "awww" moment...As a matter of fact, heres some now...

Here is Rayna

Welcome to the forum, and what a beautiful, health, happy looking flock you have! Are they all rescues, or have you had them since babies?

All of them are rescues, Rayna was given to me from a craigslist add. the man had her since 6 months old, he had recently retired and said "she had not left her cage in 6 months, she is completely cage bound, and she hates women so much she strikes at the bars when my wife walks by". It was bad first, she was so cage bound that to get her home we had to tilt her cage with her in it. Almost 2 years later, she comes out daily, goes into the outside aviary, steps up on me, talks up a storm. She does hate women, I don't know why or how these birds know the difference in humans, but they do!

Care Bear and Poco we got through AZ Exotic Bird Rescue, a nonprofit, volunteer based rescue. Bear has some slight plucking going on on his legs, the behavior has stopped but the feathers have not come back yet, our vet said they might not ever. Poco...awe Poco, he loves...LOVES my wife, he puts up with me, lol. He is such a snuggly bird with me, he listen well, does tricks and mimics whistles...Till my wife gets home, then he is all about the spread wings, and hissing at me, all while crying for her like he was soooo abused till she got home and saved him.

With the amazon, it could be that this bird has never been handled by women. They are pair bond birds. This bird bonded with a man for all those years. Women need not apply. It's really more a socialization issue. Unfortunately, an older set in his ways birds, can be difficult to change. I have an idea how it can be done if your wife is interested, but you might not like my methods...

Our rescued G2 plucked so severely, it only had head feathers, and it had festering sores on its chest, and the area where the tail should have been, when we got her. So, missing a few leg feathers isn't bad at all for one of these guys... they don't handle neglect so well.

Poco - typical macaw behavior.
