Parrots
Double Yellow Headed Amazon
Hey! How are you?
I go by eulah or eulahluff online.

Yesterday I purchased my first ever parrot. I've owned other birds such as cockatiels and parakeets before, but this is my first 'parrot' parrot.

She is a female double yellow-headed Amazon parrot. The previous owner said her owners before her had gotten her DNA tested, but she didn't have papers on it or anything. So whether she actually is female or not, I love her all the same!

Her first owners apparently owned her for her first 12 years of life, and then due to work making them travel they gave them to this lady. This lady sold her due to time constraints that only let her interact with the bird for 1-2 hours a day, which obviously isn't fair to the bird.

So her name was Jacob, and she had this name before they found out 'he' was a she! But I just couldn't stand it and renamed her Elphie, which she seems to really like.

I haven't really handled her yet since she's still settling in, but she looks happy, healthy, etc. She looks a little on the heavier side, but that would definitely due to her being on a fattening diet(which I plan on switching her off) and not even having a toy to keep herself active in her cage while her owner was away.

So of course once I got her I had to get her some things to play with and she loves it!

Hopefully I can get her to trust me so I can work on getting her to like my family as well. She's taking food from my hand, but I'm not going to push it so soon.

So hello again! I'm sure I'll have questions very soon about her care.

yay! Welcome to the forum!

My girlfriend recently adopted a 30 year-old, over-weight rescue bird, a Red-lored Amazon by the name of Cody. He was (still is) FAT, You should have seen his feet! But he seems to be responding to his diet quite well, having lost about 100 grams since his last vet visit, he should still lose another 75 or so, but he's already more active and seems happier ;) I would suggest a Vet visit to set some weigh-loss goals and see about any speciffic issues the bird may have developed from her previous diet. That's great that she likes Toys, Cody is still afraid of most toys and is a bit of an OCD-preener (causing some feather damage) from his lack of toy-stimulation all these years. It should be much easier t get a bird that's interested in toys to be active and loose weight than it is with our "fat, green chicken" ;)

A common mistake. Budgies ( aka parakeets ) are JUST as smart as the larger kinds. They are the sweetest little things and are very loyal. Just because they are purchased ( cheaply ) does NOT mean that they are ANY less loveable than any other species.

Welcome to a wonderful forum, with awesome members.:D
You are being wise taking it slowly, first gaining the birds trust.
Any question, just ask, members always willing to assist.
Keep us posted with Elphie's progress
Send some pictures, we love sharing !!!!!:D

Welcome to the forum! This is a fantastic community and you will love it here.

I agree with Ratzy too, all parrots big and small have just as much to give. Although, my tiel is DEFINITELY smarter than my Eclectus lol ;)

Wow, so many responses!

JawzX: Thanks!
Wow, that's great that she rescued the little guy. Now that you tell me of the troubles with his weight, I'm very grateful Elphie took to them right away!
She'll definitely be going to the vet soon. Both for general information and getting a baseline for her health. Luckily there is an avian spe******t just under an hour away. It's pretty surprising considering I live in the middle of nowhere, ha!

SharonC: Thank you! I'm sure I will!

Ratzy: Oh, no. I love budgies and I certainly loved mine very much! The little male I had was particularly sweet and playful. I'm not sure what I really meant my that statement. As to whether I was implying intelligence, size, etc. But what you say is very true. Though, upon purchasing my budgies I was unaware that they were as intelligent as they are. But thank you very much for the information and reminder!

antoinette: I can tell! I was so surprised at all the responses! And thank you! I've made a post in the Amazon area, hopefully that's where it was supposed to go.

Aussie Ben: Aw, thanks!

Bobby34231: Thank you! Oh, neat. There's a nickname for them and everything, that's adorable!

Cowtown: Thanks!
