i currently own a rescue cockatiel but have owned quakers and caiques hopefully i will own a cockatoo or smaller macaw soon!
We are so undecided on which macaw we want we love them all we currently own 1 Galah Cockatoo and 2GCC and 1 Sun Conure and now have are ordering a 80x40 double macaw king cage and we have visited with Scarlets and other macaws we love Blue Throats but we just can't decide something social is nice not to aggressive and just a all around enjoyable macaw noise isn't a issue what would you guys recommend

My four favorite big macs are (1) Hys; (2) greenwings; (3) Red Fronts; and (4) blue throats.

Hys everyone knows about, and price generally puts them out of reach for most folks. But big blue mushballs are fun birds.

A lot of people are intimidated by their big beaks, but Greenwings tend to be big feathered mushballs if they get handled. Every once in awhile you can get dominance issues with a greenwing (made worse by permissive parenting) but they are such confident birds that they generally handle everything in stride.

They don't come any mushier than my Maggie...

Red Fronts and Blue Throats are exceptionally clownish, and tend to be on the cuddly side as well. They are exceptionally mechanical... which also means they can take anything apart. (Including cages.) But they are as sweet natured, loving and trusting as these things ever get...

Wendy Craig has two baby blue throats right now, if you are interested, and last I heard she had red fronts on eggs. She's one of the best macaw breeders in the U.S., and what you get from her is a bird that is uber-socialized, that has been abundance weaned, and knows all the basics, which is really the key thing for pet quality macaws.

Pretty much the only Mac ppl told me to steer clear from for my first is a Scarlet (of course I fell in love with a Scarlet hybrid, so obviously I don't listen very well). Not sure of the fine print in the state where you live, but here Blue Throats are banned against ownership and even transportation through the state. Please keep legal aspects in mind while searching for your new fid. Good luck and keep us posted! [emoji4]

The OP lives in Texas and so does Wendy Craig, though I heard a rumor that she's moving to AZ. Not sure if that's true or not.

Obviously I vote for BTMs, but I'm biased. You can see the major mush pics of my Zoe here in the mac section. I'd argue she rivals Mark's Maggie in mushiness. However, Birdman is right, she's a devil when it comes to taking things apart (including her cage!) My second choice would be a GW (since Hy's are out of most people's price range.)

Red Fronts and Blue Throats pop out of the egg mushy... for the most part they're just born like that, and working with them only brings it out more and more... but both of them LOVE taking stuff apart.

My red front once disassembled an entire 8 foot playstand. She's taken the door off her cage (disassembled the hinges) She's taken the treat cup doors off her cage. She can disconnect quick links, and open most latches...

I had a breeder friend who had a pair of blue throats disassemble their entire outdoor flight cage. So, he went back and "bird proofed" it, and it took them about two hours longer the next time...

The BTM I hand fed was a "boomerang" bird. Set her down in her cage and five minutes later she's undo the latch, negotiate a full flight of stairs, and be back in a pile of feathered mush on your lap...

THIS FROM A BIRD THAT WAS STILL HAND FEEDING, HADN'T FLEDGED YET, AND WASN'T REALLY ALL THERE YET MENTALLY...

So, really one of the highest IQ birds out there. Cockatoo cuddly. Macaw playful and mischevious. I'll let you do the math on that one.
