So I just acquired a Shamrock Macaw, that came with a cage. But the cage is far too small, 23x24, and is really just junk. So my question is on internal cage space, specifically height. There is a very good price on CL for a used cage (it also comes with multiple toys and healthy feet perches)

But my worry is that the internal height would not be good enough. And that I would be better off looking (even if it take a while) for something more in the line of

King's Cages - Avian and Pet Bird Cages, Supplies, Food, Toys, Perches, Aviaries, Pluck No More

While I wish it was otherwise, money is a factor, and in this case the 2nd cage is 3x the price of the used CL cage. So should the CL cage work for me? Or will I be very disappointed with its size?

If the link to the A&E cage is the cage that is currently on CL, then Iā€™d say donā€™t do it, as Iā€™m afraid you would be disappointed with the height. I have an A&E cage for my GW macaw, however, itā€™s a dometop, which makes it a whole lot roomier.

The cage you linked to at Kingā€™s cages is awesome, yes, but since money is a factor, how about something like this?

What are the latches/locks like? The brat is going to have to have a new cage soon.

BB has tried several times to open them and can't . He is a lover of dish dumping so this really licks the red off his apple :)

I can take pictures when I get home and post them if you want

I have this exact cage as well for my greenwing Savannah. It is a great cage for the price. The latches are not super great, but she doesn't try to get out. The only plus, is they are behind the bowls so they are hard to get to since the bowls won't come out.

Thanks for the advice.

I was looking at that cage, the size is great but my concern is the build quality. The Prevue cage has the same gauge bars as the Shamrock's (Pirate) current cage, and he has managed to break all three dishes, and bend some of the bars. Also peoples main complaint was build quality and durability. But as a number of people on this forum own and like the cage, perhaps those problems are not that big of a concern.

My other thoughts is that, its $200 more than the A&E cage (while larger I would be sacrificing quality), money I could spend on making stands and an outdoor play area. The cage's location is in the same room that I work and spend 10+ hours a day in (same location as my other birds), so I liked the idea of a play-top as I would just leave his doors open and let him move back and forth between inside and out. Something I am not sure would work as well with a dome top.

Thanks again for the input, you backed up some of my concerns, and gives more more to think about. I just want to make sure I get the best cage for my situation that I can afford.

I agree with Karen.
Also I have not had one issue with the cage. There was one spot on a door the paint had chipped off but, cage comes with touch up paint. He climbs all over the cage . No bent bars . But like most things to each his own. Good luck.

I have a Silverado and really love it. I was originally concerned it wasn't as heavy as some of my other cages but it hasn't been an issue at all. The size is so generous that my Catalina (who is a cage destroyer) hasn't challenged the bars at all.

I actually think the size is more usable than my double macaw cages. The xtra width offers more options for perch placement and allows room for a full extension of her wings.

My two small complaints are:

1. It would have been wonderful had the bottom tray been divided into two smaller trays as it is a bit of a bear to pull out and clean.

2. The width of the cage is such that it can be not be moved through a normal door. If you don't have a double door available rolling outdoors for pressure washing could be a challenge.

Overall a great cage.

Ok so I am thinking of getting the Silverado and was about to hit buy, but I found that the same company makes this as well.

Because it does not have the design at the top its even larger. Its also cheaper. Any thoughts?

I actually love this cage. At the time I got mine this cage was more costly. Given the choice I would pick this one. If your new baby isn't a wonder you may be able to find a way to leave out the top center panel, than do an awesome hanging play gym above the cage.

Where are you located?

There is a very nice stainless steel macaw cage on CL in the Seattle area.....pretty sure that will hold up to cage wreckers....

I'm pretty sure any mac would be out lickity split, but it's a great idea!

I'm also a fan of dome tops.
