New homemade foraging box!

Man I knew those bird houses were good for something. :D[/QUOTE]

Yeah, those were dollar store finds as well. I bought about 20 of them awhile back. Only have about three left. Of course, with macaw beaks they only last about ten seconds...

Maggie takes the whole thing in her beak, and the next sound you hear is crunch, crack...

But with the amazons and the CAG they hold up for several days. They get their peanuts and seeds that way... I make them work for it.

Its amazing how much time they can spend on it. Not only finding a few treats but climbing and destroying it. He makes that little clicking sound when playing on it :)

My conures used the little ones as swings. My macaw uses the big ones as chew/foraging toys. And since they are dollar store bird toys... do what ever you want with them. I don't care.

And of course, phone books are still one of the all time birdie favorites around here...

Julie, what great idea! I am so going to try that, and the pop cartons as well (Thanks Mark!)

Yeah I do the phone book thing but um I was kinda mean with the last one :( Instead of drilling the hole at the top. I drilled it where the book opened and used tie wrap to secure it to the cage . He looked at me like i stole his thunder. He would destroy one in 10 minutes. NOW they last a little longer and he talks to it. I can't understand some of what he says but no doubt its best I can't mostly he says yaba daba do

Well look at Miss Innovative and Miss Creative over here! I :smile015: it, Julie!!! :D So awesome!!

It's been so long since I've actually had the time and energy for this, but I'm glad I had a little break to make something for the boys.

I was at the UPS store the other day, and while I was there I saw these great boxes! Different sizes and shapes. They were so much less expensive than if they were sold as bird products. The pics below, this box was 5"x5" and a little over 3" deep. It was only $1.50. I got a large box as a new toy box for Raven since he finally destroyed his old one, and it was $5.00.

The box when closed

Opened...

Then, the best part is... the toys inside are strung together and tied in the box so they never fall out and go under the grate!

There are also a couple big chunks of soft Balsa wood fastened in the bottom. I'm sure they'll love it. Robin needs one now :).

Thanks :smile015:... They haven't touched it yet. Sometimes it takes a while for them to discover stuff. I might need to open the lid to get them started lol!

That's fantastic Julie! What a great toy idea. Will everyone be getting one or just Raven? I see you don't have any knot un-tieers though:) Kiwi is all about untying knots, so stringing beads with knots just gives him a challenge. Untying them/flinging beads off the string is the FIRST order of business on a new toy:rolleyes: You'll have to get some pics of your boys playing with it after they decide it isn't going to eat them and is actually fun to play with:D.

Knot untying seems to be an amazon thing. And the more complex the knots, the more determined they get at figuring it out...

Whereas Macaws just cheat and bite the string/leather strip in half if they can't figure it out in the first eleven seconds.

Interesting (I take it your zons also enjoy untying knots?). Kiwi seems to get a real thrill out of it. You can see it in his pinning eyes that he's thinking real hard as he unties them. A toy full of knots or a toy with a puzzle to solve will keep him occupied for quite a while lol (not a big chewer though). Amazons are funny little birds:)

Yeah, I do have knott 'un-tiers'! Wait until they discover it. :) I just hope it lasts long enough. A lot of the time I noticed that if Griffin really likes a toy, he will be "careful" with it and not chomp through it as quickly as he's capable of.

That one is for Griffin actually. Raven's larger new foot toy box will have some of the same kinds of toys attached by a string, as well as his regular foot toys in there.
Then I will make the same size smaller one for Robin. But Robin doesn't play much. I'll have to see if he's even interested in such a thing. He settles on a toy and fixates on that one toy for many HOURS. Just sitting there calmly chewing on it. That's Robin's style of play. Totally different from his "cousin" Griffin. :) I'll post pics when I do the other ones.

I would love to see pictures of them playing with it

I'd love to see them playing with it too! They have taken no interest yet :(. I've even popped the lid open and put it where the like to play. I'll take pics soon as someone acknowledges that I did something nice for them lol! You know how they just take you for granted!

BIG new toy box for Raven's cage (you know that means for Raven AND Griffin). Actually, I think it's TOO big. I might have to put it up top on playpen, and get a smaller one for inside. This takes up a lot of the cage floor space even though the cage is 26x34. I didn't think the box was that big when I bought it.

It's 16" wide, but looks smaller in the pic.

Whhhatttt? Julie, No way? Parrots taking humans for granted? Never!

Zeke loves untying leather knots. That's how I made friends with him, he was really fearful at first. I noticed he had untied several knots, so every day I would tie them back for him. He's careful with his toys too. I have to make him a treasure box, I think he'll love it, of course he won't touch it for at least a month.

Sorry, we posted at the same time. I LOVE the new toy chest and the way you arranged the treasures! That should appeal to just about any bird.

This is awesome.......I will make one of these! Did I tell you I picked up a child's skate board at a thrift store, barbie pink of course, but painted it, put a small perch on it and drilled a hole in front and attached a 7 foot rope and pull my Greg around the house on it. Didn' t like it at first....but several tries and many patient days later this crazy Greg has his own scooter......lol.

Okay, Raven's box was too big for inside. I put it on the playtop, but now you can see the lid flops, so I had to put (second pic) the wooden clothespin bird toys there to prop the lid up. That will only last until Raven finds his favorite clothespin toys! I guess I can tape Popsicle sticks to the back? Any suggestions to keep the lid up?

Sally's favorite toy is a toy that has a bunch of foot toys tied up on leather string. I tie the foot toys on there with all sorts of different knots. Some are easy. Some require a tremendous amount of work. Like, I couldn't have untied that once I tied it...

She will go absolutely bonkers over that toy, and won't stop messing with it until every single foot toy is off.

Then she waits for me to string them up again...
