Parrots
2 Quakers and an Umbrella Cockatoo
Hello, my name is Sherri and I am a stay at home Bird Mom to 2 awesome Quaker Parrots. Yoshi & Paulie just recently came into my life for my 47th birthday. I have never been owned by Quakers and they teach me something new every day.
I am also waiting to hear if I can adopt another Quaker named Tabitha, she stole my heart when I seen her picture & I would love to welcome her into our family.
I look forward to getting to know other bird people & learning more about my babies.

Welcome to the forum...glad you decided to stop in.....

Hello Sher and nicolouspattinson, Welcome to the forum. Quakers are great little guys with a LOT of attitude. Definitely one of the best decisions I made on choosing a companion. Get some pictures up, and also let us know how your adoption turns out.

Thank you for the welcome :)
It turned out that I didn't get Tabitha because I never heard back from the rescue place after the initial contact. The first response I got from her, she sounded happy that I was interested & that I had Quaker experience, and said she would get back with me to set up a date to meet, then nothing. I am hoping that she ended up finding someone to give her a happy loving home.
But, I guess things happen for a reason because a couple days ago I was looking through Craigslist and I came across a post that was about 10 days old or so. It was for an Umbrella Cockatoo. The ad didn't say to much, it was pretty basic & looked odd to me. The price was $275 and that came with her cage. I figured that it was a scam or something so I closed it out & went to bed. Well, it was nagging at me so much that I called the number the next morning. It was legit! I was surprised as I was speaking to Henrys owner I found out his story. He belonged to his daughter & she just lost interest & he felt bad because Henry wasn't getting the attention he deserved. I voiced my concern to him & that was that I was was worried that someone could buy the bird just because the price was so low and not have the birds best interest in mind. I really didn't have the intention on buying him because I simply didn't have the money for him. He said he understood my concern & said he thought of that as well and had already turned down a few people because he didn't feel comfortable with them. We learned that we only live a mile or so from each other so I decided what the heck, I will go meet Henry. Well, Henry stole my heart and is now in my living room yelling for me.
I have never handled a bird Henry's size and I have no cockatoo experience BUT I know I will love this beautiful bird forever & learn every possible thing I can on how to give him the best care that I can. I have handled him already and I learned quickly that he BITES. I was holding him for the first time while his owners were breaking down his cage- yep, BIG MISTAKE. He got me several times pretty good. I know this was out of fear and I will not be afraid to handle him again, I tried to get him to step up but all he did was nuzzle my hand. He loves to be pet & I have found his sweet spot already.
I have his cage cleaned up & set up in the center of our home and his play gym set up in my office with his Quaker brothers. They can hear each other but have not seen one another yet. I will let Henry get use to being here & make sure he is healthy before he comes into the office.
Anyway, I am open to any suggestions from Cockatoo people and I hope to not be yelled at for bringing a bird that I know nothing about into my home because I did it out of LOVE and that's what all animals deserve, right?
Sorry this is so long!

I should explain that I had been on craigslist a lot & I started noticing that animals were appearing to be bought cheap & resold. Flipping?? That was my concern. Henry's cage alone would cost $500. Someone could have easily bought him & made a nice profit & I didn't think that was fair to him.

There is a ton of people out there who flip birds, and its sad. I think the US in general needs to crack down on the exotic animal import and trading / selling business. I think stores / breeders / and rescues need more rules imposed on them for who they are allowed to sell / re-home to. Now... everyone dont jump on me at once. I am on the BIRD's side, not the banks or the pockets of the people who do it. I care about the animals, its that simple.
Btw Sher, hows the adoption going?

Unfortunately Cockatoos are one of the hardest one to find homes for. I've seen Cockatoo ads posted for months and not find a home. Same with my friend and her U2 Lilly, she still have her after she tried for months to find her a home but no one wanted her. A lot of breeders have stopped breeding certain Cockatoos for that reason. Especially U2 and M2. Tonight while we were feeding everyone Java came over to the side of the cage dancing for me and my partner says Java loves me in his own ways. Even with his previous owners here before, he's by me instead of going to them. Which that comes as a surprise since they've had him a lot longer then I have but some how he really prefers me instead. When you say Henry nip you, do you mean blood gushing bites or just hard nips almost like bruising nips or a little tear in the skin? That's what Java did at the very beginning until the honeymoon is over then he went rampage when I stop him from doing something I did not feel comfortable with which is coming to my face. Then he went completely crazy and started attacking. These were serious bites, not little nips, where he bites really deep and leave scars. Where I was drenching with blood as I acted calm to put him away while he kept going. It was a lot of pain to deal with. Ever since that day he's been a terror when he comes out. But one thing he does the best is allowing me to clip his toe nails without a fuss. I don't even towel him to do his nails. He lets me do them and I can flip his wings out to check. I can pretty much do anything to him. But he wants to do the same back and I just won't let him cause I don't trust any bird near my face, that's where he wants to be....He also do flying attack if anyone gets too close to me, he's dangerous when he's out, all the other birds must be put up cause he will try to kill them. I have a really soft heart towards Cockatoos as they were the first big bird I fell in love with many years ago. My other Cockatoo Dixie is the sweetest Cockatoo ever, she is nothing like Java!!!! I guess I have a Dr. Jekyll Mr. Hyde in my hands....I'm taking my time with Java though as it took Dixie many years for her to turn out the way she is today as Java have only been here for a year and a half. We'll see if he changes down the road....

Some nips and the last one was a blood dripping bite. I have a pretty colored bruise on my thumb. He meant business. Surprisingly, I didn't freak out & make it worse.
I don't want to be afraid to handle him and I certainly don't want him to be cage bound, that would break my heart.
