2 Plum Heads. Indian Ringneck. Hahns Macaw <3
Looks like the hubby might come home with a new Hahns macaw next week! She is about 3 years old and looks like she breaks her tail feathers off.. She is nice and tame and says "hello" :D So.. any tips for this species? :green2:

I love hahns, I'll be waiting for pictures :)
There are a few member here that have them, I'm sure they will comment when they see this.

Young birds tend to do that. They play hard, and they aren't always aware of their tails getting in the way until it is too late. First two or three years or so, macaws always have ratty tail feathers. It's pretty normal.

That what I was thinking, Birdman666. That's what my IRN did up till her last molt. The rest of her looks amazing. OH, and looks like there is no more "might" about it, she's coming home next Friday!

It probably means she's very active and playful, which is a good thing.

Apparently you can't attach photos anymore?

Tip number one, is to be careful around that beak. Very pointy and sharp at the end.
Tip number two, train her. An untrained bird can, and will try to run your house.

Look at that little face! How adorable! Those tail feathers do look rough but let's just say it gives him character. He needs a fitting story to tell the birdy ladies though. Perhaps he's Stubby, adopted from a one-legged pirate after a vicious sea battle resulting in the loss of half his tail. Ooh or maybe it was snapped off by a great white shark as he rescued an innocent seagull from the clutches of death!

...Or maybe I just need to find a good book to read, and maybe a nap... LOL

My guess is he got them burnt off while rescuing some blind orphans from a local bus crash.

That tail looks like the typical young macaw, got it messed up sticking it through the bars of the cage and never preened it, look. He's not plucking, so no worries there.

Eventually he will learn to straighten it. Until then, get him to the point where you can preen it for him.

You do want to file the tip of the beak every 3-4 months. These guys could do needlepoint with that beak!

Who knew that such a little bird was a strong enough flyer to carry blind orphans! But the REAL kicker was when he lifted the burning bus off them...

HE IS THE MOST INTERESTING BIRD IN THE WORLD! STAY THIRSTY MY FRIENDS!

LOL you guys are great! The cage at my house is much bigger than the one she is in so I hope that helps. She already bit my hubby pretty good the first day we saw her. I guess she is simi-trained if there is such a thing.

See? The bird is Semi-trained. That is how she came along the burning bus with the blind orphans in it...

She was driving her Semi-truck down the freeway, saw the wreck, and immediately swooped into action...

Am I the only one with a spanish guitar playing in my head right now?!

I'm thinking twin mini guns a bandana and a half-chewed cigar.

Idk why but the more this story goes, the more I think of the picture on a Parrot Bay bottle lol I'm picturing my old scarlet with the cigar in her mouth too hahaha I'm thinking the great white sharks is what really happened to Miss Hanhs though.. Or maybe they were burned off already from the bus, when she ran into the shark, and that's what saved her! If she still had them she would have gotten pulled into the ocean! :D

I love my Hahn's. handle your Hahn's a lot and socialize with everyone and that will help, prevent him or her from becoming territorial and or nippy. I realize your baby is three years old so may alrady be set in his way but keep workong on it. I had Hahnna from six weeks old, and constantly had my hands in her cage and on her toys from day one to prevent her from gettong territorial. I also, exposed her to everyone, letting everyone pet and hold her. What kind of diet is your baby on? I would switch him over gradually to something without seed. I use a mix of pellets, Laffabers, fruit, nuts and veggies. I also cook for mine. They also, well atleast mine love the snuggle huts. She sleeps in hers at night. And baths, they love a bath. I cannot say enough wonderful things about the Hahn's. they are smart, extremely smart, love their pople and playful. i do not find my girl to be loud, just talkative. They catch on quick and know what they say, they just don't repeat things. i swear they know what they say. Good luck. Elaine and Hahnna.

My Ruby looooovved boxes - she loved to listed to herself echo, so I kept one in her cage. She laughed (a LOT), and within a short amount of time, she adopted my laugh as well (and I throw my head back and cackle when I laugh). She became quite the cuddler, even after all of the neglect she'd been dealt. Her favorite treat was blueberry yogurt covered raisins, but she only ate the yogurt. She called my dog by name, and at the appropriate times, though her enunciation was lost on those that didn't know her. She only ever danced to two songs in the four years she was with me. I could kiss her anywhere.

Hahn's are such funny, quirky, keep-you-laughing little birds, and I remember how much I couldn't wait to get home each day just to play with Ruby. I'm sure you'll both feel the same way about your new little love!

She has been eating ZuPreem fruit blend, but the pet shop has been mixing it with Harrison's since we decided to get her because that's what our other birds eat. So I will continue with a mix of that plus all the fresh foods I give my others. She will be coming home (TODAY YAY!) with her snuggle hut for sure, and possibly another toy or two that she has now. Her cage is all set up, I just need to run out and get another type of perch or two. I decided the rope perch I had was too small for her cage so I gave it to my plum head. I Know she can say "hello" but not sure of anything else. I've only seen her once, my hubby is the one that has gone by a few times and played with her since then.
A box is a great idea! I used to take small boxes and cut them in half for my others, I think I need to start that again! She has a lil bird bath in her cage. There is a spot for 3 bowls so I just switched one out for that. Ooh and a swing! I need to get one of them for her, do they usually like swings? My IRN loves hers, but my plum heads very rarely go near theirs... Ok I'm rambling a bit just super excited for her to get here!
