New Green Cheek Conure

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum so a big hello in that respect, on Monday I got a hand reared green only young as a friend raised it from a chick

I've grown up with parrots my whole life now flown the nest myself and a home isn't a home without a little feathered companion!

I appreciate it can take a whole for the bird to settle in but it's still behaving like a wild parrot petrified of any human contact, finally got him eating today gave him some sliced apples not keen to let him out too soon as the first time he was going kamakazee into the window and around the room away from me!

Any advice on how to ease him in etc?!

Welcome to the forums!!!! Put sheer, blinds, curtains, etc infront of the window so he won't fly into it. It will take time for him to get settle in his new home. Just be patient and tske things slowly.

Yeah I've shut the curtains just trying to get him settled before letting him run riot he's eating and drinking which is a good start just waiting for him to come out his shell show his personality my sisters got one aswell lovely playful bird!

Welcome to the forum Fare and congrats on your new baby!

It takes some time for birds to adjust into their new home. Some birds catch on quicker than others, but since you brought him home yesterday it isn't a surprise he's a little freaked out. Usually the first day or two I leave the birds be in their cage as much as possible. Sit by the cage and let him get used to your presence along with the different sights, sounds, smell, etc. of his new surrounding. When you do take him out, do it in a quiet room (bedroom for example, or even a bathroom). It helps take out some of the distractions and will encourage calmness, security and hopefully some bonding experience with you. Once he gains a bit of confidence and security, you can move into taking him out in the living room without dogs, cats, etc. Then slowly introduce each family member.

It took Layla about 3 days to finally come out of her shell. It's been about a week since I brought her home and she's a little feisty ball of energy that stole everyone's heart (including my 5lb dog). hehe she preens my dog and they fall asleep together, it's adorable. Thanks guys, yeah he's opened up a lot managed to escape after a day took me ages to find him so I've went with the name Houdini! I've started to let him out just flies onto my head and prunes my hair!
