Parrots
none at present (looking into the perfect parrot for our family)
Hello all
Im new to the forums but not new to bird keeping, I used to have cockatiels and budgies.
Im looking to hopefully make a few birdy friends and gain some information in preparation for having a bird in my life again.
Currently I have a standard mexican hairless dog, (hes a love bug, very sweet natured and well behaved), three fancy rats, and my long term boyfriend (should I be listing him along with our pets... I don't know, it just seems like important information!)
My boyfriend is a photography student who works as a bar supervisor ad I am currently not working due to illness, but am keeping myself busy with novel writing and artwork. Im all set to be a lucky stay at home housewife when we move next year which will give me penty of time to devote to our family of animals. :D
We have been thinking for a while now about adding to our family when we move, which gives us a good eight months or so to plan and research
so as to what will be the perfect bird for us :), Hello from surrey, I look forward to chatting to you all!

Hi there, and welcome to the forum - so glad you joined. :)

Sound like you have a lovely petting zoo at home already, including the long term boyfriend. :D

Do you have any idea what size bird you'll be looking for, or are you open to any and all options?

Thank you very much for the welcome :)
haha, yes, the long term boyfriend is a good addition to the zoo I feel, and definitely the hardest to care for of the bunch XD
We are looking at medium sized birds as we don't want to go in over our heads! I feel like I've got a bit of head start ater having my smaller birds when I was younger, but I think larger parrots are definitely off the cards.
We're not necessarily looking for a 'talker' personality is more importnat to us than a lot of chatter (I'd love a snuggler!) Currently we're thinking about senegals, quakers, red bellied, green cheeked conures and crimson bellied conures.
Really we'd just like a playful bird who likes a cuddle!

Oh wow, you've got quite a few to consider already. :) May I add Caiques? They are beautiful birdies, with quite the personality, LOTS of energy and quite snuggly (when they want to be). :) Or what about a Cherry Headed Conure (also called Red-Masked Conure)?

Just throwing some ideas out...that's all. :)

any suggestions are more than welcome! :) ill have to do a bit of research on both of those, I think caiques are gorgeous, for some reason I thought they were prone to be 'bitey'? Im planning on doing a lot of research before I even consider narrowing down our options, as I know how important it is to make the right decision for you and your bird.
I have a friend who's mum ended up with ten parrots (greys, cockatoos of various descriptions and and amazon) because people made the wrong choice and she just happend to be 'that parrot lady' and she ended up with so many 'problem birds' who were nervous and gave her a lot of nasty bites. :(
I definitely want to do this right and have a long happy time with our bird :)

Caiques 'play rough' which is usually misinterpreted as 'bitey'. Yes they will nip and pinch, but it is all in play.

I have two senegals and they're sweet as pie - when they want to be. :) Will be happy to answer any sennie questions you have though! Quite a few sennie owners dotted about here now :)

Senegals are birds I've always loved the look of and were one of the first birds we put on our 'possible parrot' list Id love to know what they are like to live with, as I've heard a few stories of them becoming very one person birds? (Though I have also heard good things as well!)
