Hi

My name is Lene and I live in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

A week and a half ago I bought an Alexandrine, only 4 weeks old... Name is Max for short regardless whether he's a male or female.

He's such a smooch, and he's eating really, really well. Takes less than 5 minutes to feed him. The breeder said he needs only 2 feeds per day, but I feed him 3 times and supplement with fresh vegies and seeds.

He spends his time in a pet carrier, and after each feed he'll spend time with me, getting scratches and beak strokes.. When he's about to go to sleep, he go back into the carrier.

I've got him a new cage, and I started putting him in there for just 5 minutes at a time... My dog Ben went up to sniff, and Max Lunged at him... and I thought he was a helpless little bird. Ben backed off... lol.. Ben is a large goofy dog (Great Dane X) and he too is very excited about Max, but he's such a roughie.

I'm taking photos of Max every day, so I can see him grow.

I have two other birds in an aviary outside. A shortbilled Corella, named Cory, and a Galah, named Echo. These birds came from people who were afraid of them, and didn't want them anymore. They're both the most gentle birds you can get.

I did have another bird inside... He was a Quaker, male, named Shrek... The bottom of his cage had quite a gap, and I think a wild rat got to him... I heard him screaming in the middle of the night, and he was sitting at the bottom of the cage, full of blood... I took him into my bed and he slept in my hand for the rest of the night... Unfortunately he didn't make it. This was about a month ago, and I have so missed having a bird friend in my office.

That's why I purchased a new cage for Max - not even a mouse will be able to get through those wires.

Hi and a big warm welcome to our wonderful forum
Sorry about you losing Shrek

You mentioned
Ben is a Great Dane X and he too is very excited about Max, but he's such a roughie.

Please do not let your dog near Max EVER even if you are supervising them. The have been many many sad tragic stories (search the forum) when dogs have ended the lives of many many birds.
You do not want another sad ending

Enjoy the forum

Thanks for the welcome... English is my second language and when I said Ben is a roughie, I meant he's clumsy, doesn't know his own strength, he often leaves bruises on me... mostly because he uses his feet to get my attention... Also the fact that he won't give up an animal, once he's got it... He often catches blue-tongue lizards in the back yard, and when I eventually get the lizards off him, they have no marks on them. I then put them into the neighbors yard... He's got the softest mouth I've ever experienced in a dog.

Ben also once got hold of my bare eyed cockatoo, Cory.. I chased Ben, I chased Cory, and eventually I got Ben outside, and I was sure Cory would die... He also had no marks on him, but he was soaking wet... I expected him to die from shock, but he's still alive and well, and also has no fear of Ben.... He was never let out again, while Ben was inside... Now he (he actually a she) lives outside.

The only time Ben interacts with Max, is when Max is on my chest, while I'm sitting in my recliner chair... I do allow him to sniff the bird for a second or two and give Max a little lick, then I tell Ben to go and lie down, which he does.

Hi Lene,

Welcome to the forum.

Just a bit of advice,Try to refrain from letting Ben give Max a lick, dog saliva (and other mammals) can be fatal to your bird.
