Hi, Frank Indiviglio here. I’m a zoologist and book author, recently retired from a career spent at several zoos, aquarium, and museums, including over 20 years with the Bronx Zoo.
Even considering that new fishes are discovered at the rate of nearly two per week, 2013 was a spectacular year for fish enthusiasts. Included among the undescribed new fish species brought to light in 2013 were several relatives of common marine and freshwater aquarium fishes, numerous sharks (including a large hammerhead off South Carolina), a knife fish that utilizes a different type of electric current than all others, a bizarre beast from the depths of the Antarctic’s Ross Sea, one of the world’s smallest vertebrates, and one of the world’s largest freshwater fishes. The diversity of these new species is staggering, and all seem to have amazing traits, so I was hard-put to select my favorites. Please be sure to share information about those that caught your eye by posting below. Read the rest of this article here Aquarium Advice, Information, Articles and News | That Fish Blog

Thanks for sharing

Hello,

Sorry for the delay…my email notifications of comments are not arriving for some reason.

Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated. Some aquariums keep large arapaima...worth traveling to see! Best, Frank

That's very interesting. Amazing how many animal species out there are still waiting to be discovered! Besides birds... I LOVE this stuff (fish and marine life). Thanks Frank!

Frank, your articles are always fascinating! I'm so glad we get to see them! Fancy there being another species of arapaima lurking out there? I bet Jeremy Wade ('River Monsters') will be spitting chips: did you see how he was head-butted by a large arapaima and suffered long-term heart damage?

Thanks for sharing - looking forward to the next one. :)

I did...his is the only show of that type that I'll watch..he has to ham it up a bit, to stay employed of course, but its refreshing to see an intelligent person covering creatures that are in many cases poorly-studied, best, Frank

I saw that episode before Trish!!!!! That's one gigantic fish I tell ya!!!!

(Smirk) Gotta say, I'm a bit of a fan of Jeremy's. He's pretty cute in a fishy kind of way... :D

And his dimples. And the way the Latin names just roll off his tongue. And the way he pretends to write serious stuff in his little notebook, but he's only doodling. Oh, and last but not least, his lovely accent. :)

You mean they said to you that Jeremy Wade is cute in a 'fishy kind of way', or that YOU are cute in a 'fishy kind of way' LOL!

Hah...no - Jeremy; as has been the case since boyhood, I remain baffled by what is and isn't cute!

LOL! I think we can all agree here that parrots are cute right?:p You have parrots yourself Frank?

Oh, and I do have to admit it... I thought Jeremy was pretty handsome also.

Frank, Frank! Cute is in the eye of the beholder, but one thing is certain: any guy with an intellect the size of a planet and a sensitivity to the plight of animals has cornered the market in cuteness. :)
