Parrots
Lots of parrots, most of them rescues
I have been in the lookout for a male Scarlet Macaw for a while and today I went to see a handreared male from '11. I had nuts and treats and went into the cage. I did my best to befriend the beautiful boy. Despite my efforts, I was not at all interesting to him, however in the same cage was a 22 year old parent reared not tame bolivian scarlet male. For some reason he found me very interesting and after some time in the cage, he offered his foot to me. I stuck my arm under and he stepped up. When the seller returned expecting me to have the young tame macaw on my shoulder, I was standing with the untamed bird.

So instead of a smaller younger bird, I came home with a bird, that hadn't been handled by anything but nets his entire life. Just like Sugar (my B&G) I was chosen and left with no say in what bird I was to buy.

My new bird hasn't had a name, as he has only been used as a breeder bird his entire life. I am leaning towards Tristan, as his future wife will probably be Trudi (German name as she is from Germany)

He unfortunately is plucked on his entire lower body, but Sugar was a plucker as well, when I got him, so I hope this handsome fellow, will recover as well.

I am very surprised that he is so gentle with me. On the way home in the car I had Sugar on my arm and the new birdy came over to me and sat on my shoulder. When I came home, I wanted to get some photos of him and he pressed his chest and head towards me and enjoyed being petted.

I am still a little in disbelief, but the choice was clear, I was chosen! :07:

It is so wonderful to be the one chosen! Congratulations, Tristan is gorgeous! Are you quarantining? Might be a good idea, just to be on the safe side.

Thank you very much :)

That's actually a good idea. I hadn't really thought about it. I am going to the vet for a proper check up next week. His beak has some irregular wear and I think he would benefit from a little trim.

Sugar and Tristan has already been a little close, as on the ride home in the car, Sugar was on one arm and Tristan on the other shoulder. I don't think they have actually touched.

I am planning to let Tristan stay in a cage for a few days to let him get used to humans, dogs, cats and TV  Sugar will be in the same room, but 2-3 yards from Tristans cage. Would that be a safe enough distance for a quarantine? Or should I move him out of the living area?

I was not planning for them to interact until I have a good feel for Tristan and he knows the house rules (no biting etc.)

Even though they have already been close to each other, it wouldn't hurt to have them in separate rooms for now. If Tristan does have something contagious, the longer they are in the same room the more chance that Sugar could catch it. I am hoping that Tristan isn't sick, but it never hurts to err on the side of caution:)

You are absolutely right. I know the seller and have done for some time. He has been kept in a large aviary with a younger Scarlet and the aviary next to them have 2 redfronted macaws, so should think they would have caught it as well :) He doesn't allow foreign birds into his property (Sugar had to sit and wait in the car) and very rarely take in new birds and they are always quarantined. He also has greenwings and b&g along with greys and amazons. I would think if there was any chance of contamination, it would be mine towards the scarlet :) (Sugar has just been to the vet and had a full medical with test of the 3 most common parrot illnesses)

I have not let them be close to each other, but have to let Sugar come in the living room during the day or he will kill me  But have placed his parrot stand about 5 yards from the cage where the Scarlet lives.

I still can't decide on a name. I am looking at 3 names; Tristan, Destino-Tino for short and Fruddy :)

That photo is just incredible. Sounds like this handsome boy was just biding his time for you to come along and find him his whole life:) Bet the shop owner was glad to see him find a good home too. A gentle and friendly baby is a much easier sell than a untamed mature bird.

Personally, I like the name Tristan. He looks like a Tristan to me.

Unfortunately I didn't document Sugars state, when I got him and only really have photos of him looking quite nice and whole.

This time I will document the plucking as best I can and hopefully a nice recovery :) I haven't been able to take a photo of his back, as his wings are in the way :D but his back from between his wings and all the way dovn is completely bare. Maybe I can get my sister to take a photo during cuddling, as he then relaxes his wings and exposes his back.

Just to not get angry at the seller, he is plucked because of the loss of his mate :(

I like Tristan too, but my dad thinks it's a stupid name. He likes Fruddy :) The thought of Destino makes sence, since if was fate that brought us together :)

He was not sold from a pet store, but from a reputable breeder :) I've learned my lesson with Sugar, no birds from a pet store ever again :( (I bought a 3 year old female and got a 13 year old male :12: ) I love Sugar with all my heart and today wouldn't want it any other way, but would never have named a male Sugar and probably wouldn't have taken a "not-tame" sexually mature male.

This photo takes my BREATH away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is Fruddy a common name in Denmark, like for people? I have just never heard it before.

That looks like pretty 'fresh' bald areas, so chances are good it will grow back. Especially now that he is in a home with someone he likes.

No it's not a human name, it's a like Freddy, just with a U. The reason should be because of the female is Trudi, so in Danish would sound like Trutti Frutti :)

Yes fortunately none of the skin has gone blackish and hardened. And hopefully I will be able to give him the love and attention needed for him to be content. I am also hoping I can free fly with him in my indoor riding arena. That should also keep him content :)

Eventually he will get another wife, but Trudi is from July, so it will be 4-6 years before he can have her as his real wife :32: And they will hopefully make a lot of little :red::red::red::red: <3

I got a picture of his back. At least a better view, but not the entire back.

What a beautiful story! This bird seems so happy and relaxed with you on the pictures. I hope you find a solution for the plucking.

I have found an infected feather, that have come out. I went throught his other tail feathers and found 3 feathers still in their husk. When I started scratching at the husks, he lifted his tail up towards me. I went to the vet today worried it could be beak and feather disease.

The vet said that he didn't have beak and feather disease. He said there's a good chance that his former mate helped him dehusk new feathers and he has been unable to do it himself. He would have been irritated with the folded feathers, so he started plucking to dull the pain.

I now have to give him a shower every day and help him dehusk the rest of the feathers, while the husks are wet.

I should probably say that since he has moved here, he has maintained his beak (it had an irregular wear, which is now gone) and he has only damaged 2 feathers the first night here and only mid-feather, not picking out the root.

I am quite hopeful :)

A friend of mine also has a macaw (green wing) who is plucked. She bought a special parrot lamp and that really helped. The plucking is a lot less than before. Maybe that's also something you can try if it doesn't get any better.
Your sweet macaw is such a clever bird that he has chosen you because all of the effort and love you put into the health of you're beautiful macaw.

And is his name official Tristan?

No :D It is Destino, Tino for short :) My dad and I went through all the different names and either he or I had objections to all of them exept for Tino. The name made sense as it was fate, we met- Destino, his day to day name starts with a T to match Trudi and none of the names sound similar for recall training :)
