Hi, I'm a newbie caique owner. Would just like to ask if it is ok to put a caique and a meyers parrot in one cage? Cage size is about 2x2x2 ft. Both are of the same age at 2 months old. Any comments are welcome. Thanks
Congrats on your new Caique (I have 4).I would get a separate cage for sure. They can be very aggressive and hurt or even kill another bird.I know he's young but for the future when he reaches his terrible 2s I would not take that chance.Mine have all their separate cages.
Hi and welcome. Caiques are well know for not liking parrots from other species, and will even attack members of their own sometimes. I would say separate cages, with some space between them. Both of yours are very young, wait till puberty kicks in and they both become adult parrots. Baby and juvenile birds will not be a good indicator of adult behaviour.
You're dealing with a few things here, the first of which is interspecies aggression. While it's no guarantee they will or won't get along, I personally know our younger caique Jack generally tolerates our other fids. I also know, however, that caiques are one of the more defensive species in terms of territory and because a bird gets along with other birds when young doesn't guarantee that in the future. I can also tell you that when a caique wants to bite, they bite hard and they don't let go easy. I'd rather take a chomp from my U2 than my caique. I would recommend two cages close to one another, and determine how they will get along as they age. They might socialize on top of the cages and then you can move them closer. If, as they age, they don't work so well together you can always separate the cages.
