Green Cheeked Conure
(Lulu)
Hello everyone.
I'm new to the forum and purchased a green-cheeked conure about a month ago. Her name is Lulu. She is 6 months old.
I have been trying to make friends with her. I have tried to get my hand near her but she usually moves away and will bite at me. She is gradually getting better, but she is still afraid of me.
She can't stand to have my hand near her but she also hates to be alone. She squawks if I leave her alone even for a few minutes.
Is there something I should be doing to train her? I have read that it is best to work with them out of their cages, but, I can't even get her out of her cage. Yes, I could reach in and grab her but I want her to trust me and to not be afraid.
Anyway, it's now been a month and I figure I must be doing something wrong.
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeanne

Some birds aren't very trusting at all. If you wait for them, they'll never come out! Not all but some are like this. Best thing is to grab her out if you can. Then start training it that way. Or you can do it with treats as that work with certain birds as well.

Will she come out if you leave the door open? If so try doing that and sit down on the floor. She will probably climb down to check you out.

Try offering her treats through the bars with your fingers. Talk to her and sing to her. Play silly games like peak a boo. Hide under a blanket or behind furniture to play. Imitate any sounds she makes that aren't fearful sounds. Look at her with your head turned to the side, out of the corner of your eye. Act bashful and coyly flirt with her. Eat your meals in the room with her. It can even help to take a nap in front of them and let them see you sleeping.

Thank you. I will try playing games with her when I get home from work tonight.

If it doesn't scare her, try dancing as well. Conures are big on head bobbing, so do some head bobbing while you dance.
