I'm a new bird owner, and to prepare for my new arrival, I've done plenty of research over the months for the best pellets for my CAG. Everything seems to lead to Harrisonā€™s, however I keep hearing from readings, and all of the experts that sunflower seeds should be given in very small amounts (occasional treat). I have noticed that Harrisonā€™s pellets contain mostly sunflower seeds (High Potency Formula) which is what Iā€™m supposed to start my bird on. Why is it that the main ingredient for the HP formula is sunflower seeds? Aren't these unhealthy and fattening?

My breeder uses Roudybush, and while I would like to keep him on a familiar diet to reduce stress, I want him/her (I find out the gender soon) to get the best nutrition I can provide.

He comes home in a week or two and I can't wait to finally have him home:D

Sunflower seeds are probably in the high potency forumula as they're supposed to gets lots of energy stores. Your CAG would be staying on that formula if I recall correct. I don't really have an answer but maybe that could be it, sunflower seeds are high in fat etc, which is good for energy. Most certainly not good for the smaller birds though, that's why it's CAGS/Macaws+ type food :)

Thanks for that, you're right about the energy from the sunflower seeds. I also read that the CAG should stay on high potency.. but I am still reluctant due to the sunflower seeds. i guess I'll have to ask my vet when we go to our first check up!

You can only ask I suppose! I trust harrissons, I've heard many many good reviews about them and my vet stocks and is very happy for Merlin to be on the ones that he is on. But he's on the 'adult lifetime fine'. so.... much different.

HAH! I'm thinking of naming my parrot Merlin as well if it's a boy!

I think we've got two Merlins on this forum already!

I've got Merlin&Arthur... if I get a girl I might name her gwen ;)

I'm finishing up the pellets I have from the breeder (pretty bird natural gold), then I plan to switch to a mix of Harrisons and Roudybush. :)

Check Rio's Mom spicing it up with a combination! Whats Roudybush like? I'm not sure if I can get it in the UK but I'd like to know what you think of it and stuff anyway :)

From everything I have read and researched Harrisons and Roudybush are both amongst the top brands. Harrisons is recommended a lot (I know Spiritbird uses it), and so is Roudybush(recommended at the vet), so I figured I would go with both! I wanted to get away from the current pellets I have, because of the sugar content. Some brands contain fructose or glucose. Between fructose and glucose, my vet said fructose is the less evil as it's derived from fruit. Harrisons and Roudybush both don't have any added sugar as far as I know. I emailed the two companies to see about samples, I received a sample packet from Harrisons yesterday, and let River try a bit from my hand, and he gobbled it right down! :)

There is some serius brand to chose and I belive that the best brand is what you CAG like. So I surgest that you test and see. I use Harrison and think it is good but is planning to use other brand I think is as good but half the price

Roudybush is good food and cheaper than Harrisons. I bought a bag of Harrisons and found it to not really be worth the cost. My parrots get a few different pellets. Roudybush one day, Zupreem fruitblend the next day, and now Harrisons on the 3rd day and then back to Roudybush. This way they don't just get used to one type of pellet.

Mazuri food is a VERY good food, it is made by Purina for Zoo's etc.

It can be found Online on their website.
they also have a store locator for places that distribute their foods.

I have friends who work at a zoo and another at a wildlife rehab place and they say the stuff is just amazing!

One of the avian vets who taught my exotics lab class in school swears by it for his YNA.

The HP formula is good for the greys all the time. Especially when molting or growing or breeding. It helps with their high needs for calcium. Rosie has been on H HP for 2 years now and she is very robust.
