I got a yellow naped amazon parrot yesterday. He is 6 years old and was with an older couple. When I met him he immediately wanted to be on my shoulder so I let him.
Now that I have him at my house he wants to be on me if I am anywhere near him. In fact last night he got startled and flew to the room I was in. When I put him on my arm to move him back to his cage he started saying "happy bird", "whatcha doing", etc. He seemed to be so happy. But he would bite at my shirt. Any time I tried to pull my shirt away or lean over to put him on the top of his cage he would bite and growl at me and move away from the cage.
This morning I opened the cage and he climbed on top. When I reached in to change his food and water he immediately climbed on my arm and back to my shoulder again. Doing the same thing. But this time more growling and biting. I had to have my "bird friendly" neighbor come and put him away. Now I am terrified of him. Afraid to let him out because he might come after me. I think he feels safe with me and just wants to be near me, but since I dont want him biting on my clothes and sitting by my face he gets mad when I try to get him off.
I am sure he is stressed out, but now I am a mess. Not sure what to do...how to address him, keep him off of me and even change his food and water. He is used to being out on top of the cage for 2-3 hours a day but I am wondering if I should not allow him out for a few days while he is so stressed and maybe posessive of me. Really scared he will fly right to me and start the biting again.
Any suggestions?? Thank you so much!
