Meet Zen, our new bng. He’s is 4 1/2 months and we are told his parents are considered Bolivian bngs. Doing our best to let him settle in to his new home, but every time I walk near the cage he lifts his foot and I can’t resist picking him up. :)

He's a beast! Congratulations. At this age tgey still need a lot of attention and guidance. Actually makes them more confident and independent later.
This is one if the most important times in a burds life. And getting everything right, now, prevents so much behavior issues later in life.

Food and anxiety and ability to deal with stress are linked. So make sure abundance weaning, comfort evening feed can continue to a year, or even a practice for life.

These birds do a lot of learning from their parrots in the first 2 years of life.

He's gorgeous! Such a sweet look on his face! PLEASE stick around, I'd love to see more of Zen!

Thank you all. He’s settling in well so far. The breeder said he was fully weened but I bought some Higgins Intune hand feeding formula and we mixed some up tonight. He ate about 35ml, so not much but it sure did make him happy. I plan to continue to offer it as long as he will take it.

A tip for the future - offer baby parrot formula every so often even after he is well into adulthood. Why? Because if you ever have to administer medicine, its MUCH easier to get it into him via small amount of formula+medicine then trying to force it into him.

SO beautiful! I hope you 2 have a long and wonderful life together.

If I may - a few suggestions?

Even clipped parrots can fly away! When startled even a parrot that has been clipped can generate enough lift to fly, never to be seen again. And macaws are really strong fliers. So I suggest you start right now, to train Zen to a harness, much easier to do it when they are very young like Zen. Lots of resources online on how to do this and the most popular harness is the Aviator.

Harness training with Salty

Check with you local Fish and Game authorities to find out if there are raptors in your area. They love to eat parrot! Hawks, falcons and eagles are a real threat to parrots outside, if they re in your area.

Letting your Zen walk around on the grass seems like a good idea, however if there are wild bird populations that come to your property, be aware that some can carry disease and parasites and you want neither for Zen! My good friend Sailboats just let us all know that there has been a big uptick in Avian Flu in native species in the North East USA, so keep that in mind! And of course if you treat your lawn with any chemicals, Zen probably shouldn't be on it.

Welcome to you and Zen! I love the picture of him looking straight into the camera,so inquisitive and alert.
