I am new here, and was hoping to find a community of Amazon owners.
I have been a bird lover for many years now, I had a few smaller birds but I relocated to SC from FL and had to leave them behind and find them new homes years ago.
Now I've finally been able to aquire a larger bird, and I chose a DYH Amazon, he/she just arrived today and I had to pick it up at the Delta Cargo area, I don't know the sex but I have the DNA sample to send in. He/she was born 5/31 and is still on 3-4 feedings a day (according to the breeder who lives in FL) I have the proper food, syringe, thermometer (she said the food should be 106 and thats what she was feeding it at and I wanted to make sure it was 106) hes still got his little air plane crate for now, as he is not "perching" yet or anything and still a bit wobbly and clutzy.
Now she brought him to the airport and fed him before he flew this morning at 7:30am, and said I should try to feed him when I got him home around 12-12:30 or so - but he didn't eat much. I only was able to get a little bit in him, at first he seemed really interested, but then not so much and refused, I tried for about 15-20 minutes and only got a little more in him. His crop was not completely empty, last I checked it had a little bit. The breeder says to wait until its completely empty now to try again, so I am doing that. Though I am a little worried.
I have handfed almost all the smaller parrots I used to have and never had a problem but this one being the larger size it just makes me a tad nervous, I will feel better once he eats more I think.
Also, hes back in his crate for now, and looks to be dozing on and off, picking at the feather shafts where the feathers are still growing in, and picking at the bits of paper bedding. He/she does a lot of stretching, and I had him out for a bit and really he is just the most cuddly bird I've ever known. I think if I let him he would sit in my lap all day and let me rub his neck! I think it was putting him to sleep as well! He seems to really love being out of the cage, being held, being cuddled, pet, rubbed, etc. etc.
He doesnt seemed scared or angry or timid AT ALL. I thought he would be seeing as how he had such a huge change today! But to my surprize hes extremely calm and loving! (Is this normal?!)
I know I had some questions and this was one of them, when he dozes in his crate his wings sort of hang to the sides - I was worried this was some sort of bad sign?
I'm attaching some photos of my new amazon. Since we haven't sent in the DNA I don't have any clue what to name him, even though I keep referring to him as a him, we really have no idea, unless there is some other way to tell which I didn't think there was.
So unless I hear otherwise I will wait a bit longer until hes completely empty and try again at 106 degrees. He doesn't really seem interested in anything else even though she packed some stuff in the food bowl for him he hasn't touched it.
So being his new mommy I am a bit worried of course and will look at every little thing as a sign to be concerned!!
