Well I'm still quite new to the site, said hi then disappeared *mostly due to me being lazy and such*

In any case things have happened over the past few weeks so I'll update here. First thing is first. My white bird, Bear, has passed away, due to an infection caused by a dropping from Gum on his nose. I didn't get it in time as it was there when I got home. The best I could do was make my poor Bear feel comfortable, I held him and warmed him against me until he passed away. I know I only had the bird for a few weeks but he was a part of my family. I buried him, as deep as I could in the frozen dirt.... it was hard doing since all i had was the back of a hammer.

Gum has become more friendly to me, and will sit on my finger but I'm afraid he's not getting his social time he needs so I did get another parakeet. This one's pretty young and he was very excited and quite protective over him for a few days then attacked him. The little bird is safe and alive still, though shaken, but they seem to be getting along when I put them with each other always supervised. Gum is once again protective of him/her so we'll see what the future brings for now they stay in separate cages but close to another.

So that's it for an update.

I'm sorry for your loss; though, glad to hear your other birds are doing nicely.

If Bear died from an infection from Gum's dropping, I would have to think Gum has the infection, too. I would have to say he/she should visit a vet.

Sorry poor little bear passed. I doubt very much that was the reason Bear died though. You mentioned you hadn't had him long I would suspect he had a bug when you got him. That said i would take advice from everyone & take your other 2 birds to the vet for a check up because what ever Bear passed from he could have infected Gum & now the new baby. If it was a bacterial infection it is better to seek help now than when it's to late.

I feel bad because I can't drive and nearest avian vet is about 45 minutes away in Rochester. Right now it Gum's decided to be backed up a bit, I cleaned him as best as I could and I have been comforting him. I can only take him to the vet tomorrow because the closest one for me is over an hour and a half away and I have no support group at home that will take my son while i bring in my bird to be checked out. So I'm crossing my fingers. I love my birds a lot and I hope Gum gets healthy and Rio stays healthy and I feel like a bad owner for not being able to care for them to the fullest.

I also thought that seemed weird that Bear would die from an infection from Gum, but Gum hadn't died. However, Pedro is likely right that they all have it if one did, I'm sorry to say. A lot of bacterial infections and other bird diseases are airborne even.

Can you pay someone gas money to take you to the vet? Take your son with you if you can. I see children at my avian vet's all the time.

all i have is myu family and well they won't do it. Not for a bird.

edit its too late even if i were to start drivingt here now he would pass away before we even got halfway... hes doing the same thing bear did i feel so horrible

I would do what you can to get Rio there tomorrow. Also clean the cage, toys and bowls now with a 50 part water to 1 part bleach solution. I make it using a measuring cup with 1/2 cup bleach and 25 cups of water in a bucket. It might be too late for Rio catching it, but at least it will kill it on their things and cage.

I'm very sorry, but it does sound like you probably bought them with the infection.

i probably did..,. i wish i could do more. i have learned that it doesnt tke much when a bird gets siock at lewast a parakeet

Rio probably can be treated even though she is small. Vets are really amazing these days. They can even treat mice now. Small means a lot less medication to pay for actually. They will show you how to give it to her with a syringe. Or you can put it on food like bread if she likes that.

i will find an avian vet for Rio asap. i really dont want 3 deaths on my head

thid ids insane because he was perfectly fine when i posted my update now hes having seizures of sorts rio did call to him and he tried answering baxk... not sure how good of a sign that ius

Can you put him into a storage container with a heating pad on under it? Not too hot, but it will make him feel better. Give him a bowl of food and water in there also in case he wants it.

My Grey has had seizures because of a health issue. Not a lot you can do without the injections to stop them. Just be aware he may not know where he is, or what is happening and you might get bitten.

he has been notorioys for biting me so ill expexct it i have been giving the heat of my body and have goiven him water. hes very restless but if he makes it throught the night i will be calling everyone i know to get to y local vet anhd try to get him treated

Well, that's something, but I think our bodies are actually cooler than a bird's is. And unless you can hold him all night, the heating pad would be better. And it will give him a chance to move around if he wants to and eat/drink when he wants to.

There's one problem. The only heating pad i have is electric so having water in the same box as a bird having a seizure and an electric pad is not such a good idea

So sorry to hear of the other babies passing, hope you can get the little one to the vets office. I would take my kid with me but it is your call on that.

In the future you should quarantine a new bird when you bring it in, I am sure the more experienced will chip in here but I believe it is like 30-40 days before allowing it in the room with your present flock to avoid this from happening again.

Put the heating pad under the box. That is the safest thing to do, you are right, you don't water and the heating pad together. You also don't want to burn the bird.
