RE: New 3 month old Quaker :green2:
Hi parrot lovers,

I was searching for a Quaker Parrot for a while. Always a day late. I finally found a breeder online, (30 minutes away) went to their house they have 75 - 100 parrots.

They has a 3 month old Quaker for 350.00 they said it was Female?

They let me get it off of the cage; it flew onto my hand after a few attempts. Seemed to be very tamed, no biting, no aggressive anything. So I purchased her and brought her home today August 22/2020

I set up a night cage in my bedroom, and a day time cage in my living room.

Put water and food in both. Put a chewing /toy on bedroom cage, need to get some for the daytime cage.

She hears me typing this on my laptop and keeps flying to me then on my laptop. She wants the keyboard for herself lol

All in all very friendly, no biting yet, fly’s to me, and then I put her back on her cage, that only lasts for a few minutes then fly’s back onto me. Had to put her in cage just to Finnish typing this post lol she wants my keyboard.

She likes landing on my head if I do not have my hand out. (Hope to break her of that)

I have a 12 foot kitchen Bay window, when she was flying she flew into it. how can I keep her from doing that? I don't want her to break her neck.

She is eating now since I put her in her cage. oops spoke to soon, back on me and seems that it not the keyboard, its to my neck and playing with my nubs, whats with that lol

put some cardboard on my chest and she is loving the cardboard..

back in the cage so I can finish typing this post lol

Questions:
Should I cover her at night?
Does the night cage need food, water and toys?

What toys should I get her? And where is the best place to get toys?

going to make a few perch stands for rooms in house.

Treat me a rookie Quaker owner 101

Thanks
Sam

Welcome new Quaker love!

Yes they love to tear up remote controls keyboards etc ;)! Yes they are vet social species.

Sleep cage, I think should have water and food available, birds have fast metabolism, and what if they are in their longer than planned. Covering the cage can be helpful in sleeping in. I don’t cover or use a sleep cage, might be nice but,,, my rescue Penny can nit tolerate a covered cage, she screams sbd freaks out, her life was pretty bad before I git her so I don’t know the cause.... my rehome to me Pikachu has night frights if tge cafe is covered but no night frights if left uncovered., sooo no covers here,,,,,

I have several stations around the house fir my multiple birds. Tge csge tips are filled with oerches, sbd stuff to chew on. Then I make use of the space above the cages, by ceiling hooks and fishing line I hang swings, rope hoops and bungee down to a little above their head burger egen they are in the cage top oerches. They spend a lot of their time foraging sbd hanging out there. Then I have over the breakfast bar, ceiling hooks hanging oerches. Then next to my chair in the living room I used tge ceiling hook to hang a huge spiral rope on one side, and a movable metal stand with hanging swing and oerches in the other....
And same by my slider. Works great they stay off the furniture, off the shelves and floor and use their “ furniture “some have toys and yucca chips to chew, some have a little dish fir snacks.

Most toys I make myself , things I know that appeal to them individual. Tge favorite chew stuff, yucca chips, and those roll of “ shredders “ you weave in cage bars or attach to stuff. I make knots they can untie, they have a cup of plastic bottle caps, they have little foot toys they can carry around, plastic doodads they can bang, they like those big willow balls I stuff paper straws, and a bunch of stuff inside they pull out and chew on the willow as well....or little mini cardboard cut shapes on a zip tie to chew, or little cardboard boxes with holes that’s they can tear up pull out nuts or toys.

On top of the cage I have a shallow big serving dish that I put an inch of so if water in fir baths... glass brownie or casserole dish I spread out their veggies in..

Aww sweet little baby! I think all babies look female... DBA tear is the way to go, yiu can do online, print their page tip s nail to get a drop of blood out on the late sbd msik. I use flour on a paper towel and hold nail till bleeding stops..

I woke up this morning and decided to make a few chewing toys with what I had laying around the house.

I cut up some cardboard boxes into angles, drilled hole in them, I also used water bottle caps, and spoons from my shake mix.

Made a few of these to keep her busy today while I run to the store and get some rope and other toy materials.

what do you think, do these look OK.

I would also love to see some others DIY Toys and even store bought if you feel like posting them or providing links.

Thanks
Sam

I missed your update! Your DIY looks great!
How’s the baby??? Do you have a name yet?
I’m sure you know , this is the best time to expose your bird to lots of new things they learn like sponges at this age! So lots of different veggies, road trips ( take with yiu to the safe stores) , meeting people , start teaching foraging, use words in context.
Oven baked bites , sold at my safe bird store online , pic of card above. Or you can get at pet smart. They are my birds fav pellets, big cube they holding and munchies on them. Made in America have good ingredient. Yiu can get the medium or extra large ones they like them the best.
I’ll work on pictures of my stuff lol

This is my bath dish , it’s rainy so Pikachu took a bath, also yiu can see the acrylic sheet I got at Home Depot or Lowe’s . I use them on top of the cages so poop and food doesn’t go down into perches and cage food dishes.
The bath dish is just a sturdy serving dish , when they sit on the sides it won’t tip, they like the water to be only an inch or so deep

My bird like to be acrobatic, so swings, things to climb, and leap between perches , do dare devil stuff really appealing to them. I change it up pretty often , trying to encourage the most use. This pic kinda a mess, but hopefully inspires you
If yiu can zoom under my green Quaker Penny is a green rubber ball that I have stuffed with stuff they pull out from the holes, it was a dog ball but I see they sell them fir bird now too

She (?) Is doing great, very playful, No aggression at all, fly’s from her day cage to me on the couch, lands on either me or the perch in front of me. I have a hand perch and clicker, training her to fly off of the perch onto my hand held perch. she seems to like doing that.

in the morning I uncover her and she comes out of the cage and I bring her into the living room and put her into her cage (leave door open) then she eats. Comes out when wants attention.

I needed some food so I got her some ZuPreem FruitBlend Flavor Pellets Bird Food for Medium Birds, she seems to like it, started eating out of my hand then in cage.

I need to get her a cuttlebone.

No name as of get, I just call her Quaker.

Going to get some hardware and tree branches to make a few more perches.

I made a MP3 voice file that says
Hello
Good Morning
How are you
Quaker Parrot
Want to play
Love you
Laugh
I’m hungry
Is that Good
Hello How are you.

Made voice file with Audacity
Put the MP3 file on my IPod and looped the recording.

Played for a few minutes, will be doing that when I leave the house till I come back.

Other than that, the only thing I need to break her of is fling onto my kitchen pot rack on the ceiling. When she does that I get her down and put her in her case for a few minutes, then let her back out.

Her flight seems to be improving, circles the room then landing on me, her cage or the perch.

I’m very pleased on the way her is acting so far.

I may try to make some stiff roes by putting wire through them? your cage look like fun.

Sounds like you got a great Quaker baby that chose you!
My Quaker Penny barks when the dogs bark and beeps with the microwave, yiu never know what they will pick up.

If she picked up the mop I would be happy lol

We will see what she learns? Hopefully talking soon?

I may add some Dog, Cat, or other sounds after she learns some basic words?

I was making some modifications to her cage today. Added some cage steps, or perches to the outside of the cage and door... and another branch on the inside to make it easier for her to come down from the upper to the lower... same for the outside. Here are some pics.

While parrots are mimics. They are really smart and socially driven in their talking. They like to learn words in context. Mine like to laugh, yes they like the sound of laughter and copy it, but they really like to be funny and understand laughter . So when they do something funny they laugh to each other, and they anticipate a funny situation and start laughing.

They like endearments , so they pick those up fast. I say things like aww little baby, give me a kiss , I love you, so when I’m holding ten and petting them they will say those things , they will say give me a kiss then kiss me. At their cage they say things like hello , come here, they don’t say give me a kiss or I love you at the cage... like when I set out food they say yum yum , because that’s what I have said when giving treats. But I haven’t ever worked in teaching them words, I should , but they pick up stuff so I guess I never worked st it.

As to how long till your new baby speaks... a month? Maybe fir the first word? The more fun or linked a word has the more likely to say, with my green cheeks they would practice st night or in a corner of the cage, just mumbling to themselves. With the Quaker’s they just all seem to whip a new word out when they are ready , I never heard them practice...

My re home Pikachu came to me only knowing peekaboo used while playing that. I’ve had him almost a year and only in the last month has he starred to say good boy, hello, good birdie, pretty bird. I haven’t tried to get him talking that’s just the stuff he has heard all year and I guess he saved it up lol and this month he just started saying it all.. the previous 11 months he said nothing no practice. But laughing he picked up right away

Ok so I have been making some progress with my Quaker, practicing Flight daily. She started finding new Areas of the house to fly to, like upstairs, on cabinets etc. So I purchased some room door screening and will be putting some up so she does not fly into section of the house that I do not want her.

I received some stuff to make some chewing toys to her keep her busy. Some pics will show.

Also added some more branches for her to have fund on and added some ply stuff to them.

Also needed to put some reusable sticker on my 12 foot bay windows to keep her from fling into it. they also look nice.

Your Quaker is so dang ADORABLE! She's in her awkward phase between baby and teenager. SO CUTE! you have a ton of little projects for her to use, learn and entertain herself with! Excellent job.
