Hello All,
I see that I posted a similar thread back in 2010. That was the last time our Eclectus (Sophie) laid eggs. At that time she had laid 3, chose one, sat on it for 28 days, and then the process ended. This time is much different. (Incidentally she is now 5 and a half).
Sophie has laid her 5th egg during this cycle;; she lays one egg, and then approximately 7-10 days later she lays another and so on. All of the eggs have broken when they hit the bottom of her cage; I even tried to put newspaper down but that didn't help. She will then eat the shell of the egg and I also give her some calcium.
My local "bird guy" who is excellent and owns an all parrot pet shop advised that if she seems happy and healthy (she is) then I don't need to take her to an avian vet. He advised changing the amount of light she gets. He did say if I chose to take her to an avian vet they may be able to "give her something" that will curtail her egg-laying, but he is somewhat against this. The issue my wife and I have at home with lighting is that we have a split-level home and Sophie's cage is in the main living room/dining room area where we always are. I am concerned that if I get her old cage out of the attic and set it up in another room to put her to bed at night she will be confused and scared.
I am just wondering how long this will continue? It is winter here and I would guess in a few weeks the weather will change so I am assuming that may play a part. The reason I want this to end is her behavior: She is fine sitting with my wife and being good when I am not home. But when I get home and she sits with me, she takes my glasses off of my face and then puts her head/body right in front of my face and moves from left to right in front of my face. Or, if I am petting her even just on the head, she will lay her head down either on my chest or hand, put her butt up in the air, and then recite several words or phrases over and over again (In a non-laying state she usually was pretty quiet). I have always been her favorite and she and I have a bond, but this is getting ridiculous and I want my old bird back. I also am concerned for her health if she keeps laying, although she is alert and happy (just naps more then she used to, but is fine in between naps).
Any advice, tips, as to what I can do for her, and/or is this something to be worried about will be appreciated. I'd also like to know how long this process will last? She started around January 24th or so.
Thank you in advance for your help folks!
