Hi my name is Ashley and I have a male green cheek conure he was hatched Nov2018 he is spoiled to the max he has always been super active and now all he wants to do is sleep and cuddle I don’t know if it’s hormonal behavior or what I took him into the vet and she said he didn’t look sick I just worry about him he’s still eating and drinking and hasn’t stopped grooming himself I have no idea what it could be....

Hi Ashley - welcome! I totally get why you are worried, changes in behavior, like activity levels, are often concerning and should be checked out. I have a few thoughts....I’m sure others will chime in as well. Question about the vet he saw - was it an avian vet? I ask because birds are really different than other pets and “said he didn’t look sick” doesn’t sound like any tests were done. We can help you locate an avian vet if you’ll give us a ballpark of where you are in the world. Another possibility is that he could be hitting puberty and he might be hormonal (he’s about the right age for puberty to be a thing). Getting enough hours of sleep time can help with puberty issues. Most birds need 10-12 hours of sleep per day. What’s his diet? I know, lots of questions :)

I've found with mine Zod is younger and still plays a lot, Clark the older one is just content sitting on her throne (my shoulder). They fight at times, other times they cuddle like little lez lovers. Sometimes they work in tandem using the same calls or people words to get what the want.

Both still stimulate easily like if I bring a wireframe ball to my shoulder or get a treat or....

Like puppies and kittens they kind of chill out after a bit....it isn't always 0-300mph; more 0-90mph if they are in the mood. They mellow.. Even Zod is somewhat more mellow, before I could barely keep up with her.

DO make sure your vet is a certified avian vet, otherwise thier advice honestly might be less than the help you get on here.

In all check stool, check weight, attempt to stimulate and see if there is a reaction. Basics.

Thank you and they are certified I also found another vet in Tulsa ok that is at a hospital I have talked to him and I am taking him in on Monday to have him rechecked out he just wants to sleep all the time and has lost some weight hope we can get this figured out thank you for your reply.

Glad to hear that you’re getting a second opinion. Let us know what they say?

It's always good to follow your instincts. Sleeping way more and weight loss, are sometimes my Ta-dah had when she had a yeast infection.

So hopefully your new vet does a fecal , and oral cytology, and culture if needed.

Keep us posted, hope your baby is ok.

I am very sad to say Zazu didn’t make it I really want to thank everyone who replied to my post it really means a lot I hate that this has happen he was my first and only bird I wished I would have known he was sick maybe I could have helped him better...

I'm very sorry for your loss.

You did the right thing by following your instincts and seeking a second opinion. Birds are so fragile...try not to beat yourself up...again, I am sorry you are going through this....

Did the new vet perform a necroscopy to determine the cause of death? I am not trying to be insensitive, but knowing what happened is part of preventing it in the future. Refrigeration is crucial if there is a lag between the time of passing and the time of the necroscopy.
