I've noticed my parrot acting a bit sluggish and unwell since last night. He wanted to stay in his cage, so I put him to bed early. This morning, he didnāt seem any better and looked fluffed up. I weigh him every morning, and his weight is within the usual range, fluctuating by +/- 4 grams. He ate and drank a bit this morning, but not much, and his droppings look normal. However, he hasnāt shown any interest in coming out of his cage after breakfast and just went back to his sleeping perch.
Iāve set up a heat pad on one side of his cage and a heat lamp on top to keep him warm. I called the vet to see if I could bring him in, but theyāre fully booked and can only admit him for overnight care with a possible check-up tomorrow. Iām not sure what could be causing this, but the only possible issue I can think of is that he bit through a bag of chocolate-covered pretzels and may have eaten some chocolate. When I checked the bag, the pretzels were intact, with only a bit of chocolate shaved off, so I don't think he ingested much. Heās showing no signs of vomiting or diarrhea, and everything else seems normal apart from his sickly appearance.
Normally, he doesnāt rest his eyes or nap much during the day, but today, he was sleeping until 9:30 am, which is unusual. My questions are: What could be causing him to act this way? Is there anything more I can do for him besides providing a warm environment? Since he just turned one last week and has never been sick before, how long should I monitor him before taking him to the vet, or could he recover on his own?
