Hey! So i have a parakeet and my house is gonna be remodeled in a few months. Is this gonna be bad for the bird??:eek: hope not! This is happening on the main floor of my house, and my keet is in my room on the second room, if it helps :)

the big worry with remodeling is asper, a mold that can grow in the lungs. As as pieces of the house such as walls or flooring, even old carpet, is torn out it can release the mold spores into the air. At my house the kitchen was re-moddeled. New flooring and new counters where a biggy, as well as lots of painting. I kept Rosie upstairs and had the windows open all day then closed at night(it was 35-40 at night). Rosie was fine, but all situations are different.

If it was Pionus or a african grey I'd say remove the bird completely from the house since they're prone to asper. But as long as you keep good airflow from a window I think your budgie will be fine :)

Are you having this remodeling done or someone else? As CA mentioned, there are a lot of things you can do to limit exposure to your bird...post a little more information about what is going to be remodeled & we can probably give you a better heads-up about what to watch for.....

In the middle of the house in the main floor, there's this big square with the bathroom in it and we r gonna remove that. Then we are gonna put in a mud room with a new bathroom. I do have a window where my budgie is, but by the time we get to remodeling it's prob gonna be winter! Should I have someone bird-sit till this thing is done if this is the case?

While there is going to be dust, you can have your contractor close off the air duct to the bathroom & seal it until he is ready to re-install it & activate it again.....also, the return duct to the air system should be covered & taped shut while any walls are being taken down.....depending on the size of your house, there may be two returns in your house, you may have to temporarily install a smaller micron filter in your other return, rather than the filters you normally use.....

Unless Epoxy is to be used, you can specify low or zero-VOC paints to be used in the remodeling, with no added costs.....you can also have your contractor give you a list of all paints, adhesives, grouts and any other types of sealants, by brand & model number/type, before any work is begun...that way you can research the list to be sure everything is safe.....

Epoxy based paints/sealants, as well as some oil based paints can take up to 30 days to lose their toxic odors.....even if the contractor has to build a vinyl shower pan for a custom shower, you shouldn't have too many worries, even the sealants used for grouting/sealing tile usually are minimal odor and usually dissipate when dry...usually the same afternoon they are applied.....

People in different parts of the country think of mud rooms differently, but if your mud room is going to be a wet-sink utility/laundry room, you shouldn't have any further concerns than what I've already mentioned.....

Good luck.....

My birds have been through several remodels without any incident without any real special precautions, though I live in the midwest where mold issues are more rare I guess.....

I think your bird will be ok. But if you have a friend that can bird set for you that would be the safest way to go.

I would think the noises and people would be more disturbing than anything for her. I'd just keep her out of the way...maybe have a filter on in the room. I think she'll be fine.

Thanks!!! She's pretty out of the way :) the thing is I'm in the process of convincing my family to get a GCC for a family bird, and was gonna put her cage close to where the Reno is gonna be. I was thinking of moving him/her up to where my other bird is for the time being? Assuming we get one :p LOL
