Good evening,
My name is Kim and I have 2 Indian Ringnecks as well as Green Cheek Conures.

Both laid eggs at the same time. The Ringneck refused to sit on her eggs so I put them in with the conures. Only 1 egg hatched and I think it is a Ringneck. Do I allow the Conures to continue to take care of it?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Well this is a first....
I can't really say, if it was me and I had hand raising experience, and knew all the correct temperature , humidity, cleaning, feeding around the clock, weight tracking, safety ECT...I would pull the chick at a little over a week and hand rear. Or I would assist feed while keeping with the GCC. As I fear the GCC couldn't keep up with the weight and size of a growing IRN... But I don't have experience hand raising chicks, and their are a lot of dangers for the chick if you don't know what you are doing.

I would pull Indian ring neck nest box and discouraged all breeding after this for both pairs.

Hopefully someone else will give you better guidance.

Well this is a messy place to begin.

First, is the chick fuzzy or bald? Fuzzy is GCC, bald is IRN.

Also, next time leave the eggs; they often wait over a week to start sitting.

Are you at home and able to feed a baby around the clock every 1-2 hours? If not you really can’t pull the baby until it’s a little older and able to go 3-4 hours but really in order to hand feed at all the feedings never really get spaced more than 6 hours apart during the day. Are you able to do this? Do you have a brooder?

I would NOT recommend leaving an IRN baby with gcc parents. Gcc feeding is extremely violent and aggressive (seriously isn’t like feeding a jack hammer) compared to the nice slow East feeding of an IRN. I would honestly fear the gcc would injure the IRN and that’s assuming they don’t get wise to the switch one day and just tear the baby apart.

If it is an IRN and you aren’t prepared to hand feed starting now, then I recommend finding a breeder, vet, or pet store near you experienced and capable of hand feeding a chick this young. This is a heartbreak waiting to happen.
