My tiel "loves" me more than he should.

So I think our new boy has chose me as his mate. Whenever I am near him, he shows off, sings to me, and tries to "mate" me while on my head or my hand.

I put him down the minute he starts acting up. He is 2 1/2 years old. We have only had him for 10 days and he is my first tiel.

Other than putting him down right away, is there any other things I should be doing to help teach him that this behavior is not appropriate and I am not his mate without hurting the bond we are making?

Hahaha! Nice!

All jokes aside, that's really all you should do. It's a natural behavior, so definitely not something to be punished. But at the same time, most certainly not something to be encouraged, either.

So whenever your little guy starts feeling a little amorous, just put him down, as you've been doing, and give him some time to cool off. He should get the idea... mostly.

Chances are, you'll be fending off his advances for years to come. But it's definitely possible to lower the frequency of these courting displays.

For your part, you can make sure not to pet his back, run your hand down his tail, or rub under his wings, as any of these can get him sexually aroused.

"Years to come"... Oh boy!!! Hahaha Thank you though. He hasn't allowed any petting or scratches yet though but I will keep that in mind when he begins to allow it.

I am glad to know I am doing the right thing. I just set him next to me or if he is really persistent then he goes back in his cage.

We will just be consistent with him.
