Hi everyone. Venus is a Cuban Amazon. my wife surprised me with a trip to
a local breeder for my birthday October 2016. I was supposed to look at a sun conure. But Venus absolutely stole my heart on the spot.
I have learned a ton about parrots since then. I immediately started reading and learning all i could about handling and training.
Venus was born early June 2016. Mainly hand fed but kept with 2 siblings until I brought her home. She had very little handling but was already flying.
Since then she and I have become extremely close. She has free roaming over most of the house when I am home including her own spaces in every room. She loves to spend time on her play stands, and in our 4 season room with lots of windows to watch out of. She has never been clipped and wow can she do some acrobatic things. I was shocked to see her hover for several seconds on more than 1 occasion.
As for behavior, she is mostly very well behaved. She steps up easily, will come when called( if she doesn't want something else more), loves to ride on heads or shoulders( especially if you are working around the house), will play with the dog and cat(supervised), has station training somewhat, still working on staying. She likes to whistle. Has several words already, step up, hello, you're welcome, what are you doing.
I have one training question that i have trouble with though. How can i teach her to not perch on undesireable places, like on pictures on the walls, or lamp shades. I can station her off them, but seems like i am reinforcing her to go there, just to have me station her and get a treat. Any ideas would be appreciated as i feel like i am chasing her off those places.
I have been reading here for quite some time, and have enjoyed the stories and awesome information everyone has shared. It was very cool to hear that my Cuban is not the only psycho Amazon out there, she has dive bombed the back of my head more than once when i didn't give her all the attention she wanted. and when i think she is mad, wait 3 minutes and she is on my lap for scratchies!
