Got me a new macaw today ( Scarlet Macaw girl )
She's over a year and half old and very tame. In fact she was introduced to me from a pet dog carrier and she did not hesitate to immediately step up when I offers my hand. She also let me pet her so it was an immediate bond.
On the way home sitting next to me in the car , she already said she's a Pretty Girl, and we shared a banana. Looking forward to learn something new about birds - macaws. Allready have some questions as to what do you guys prefer to feed your macaws . Seed diet or pellets. She's on pellet diet (new to me) as I never had a bird on pellet diet. I'm told sunflower seeds are not good for macaws.( Really ??? ) Any suggestions as to the mix diet maybe ( pellets and seeds ) ( Will upload some pics tomorrow) :red:

Love to hear about your new baby! What's her name? Seed diets only are like humans eating candy every day. They aren't a viable source of complete nutrition. I believe it should be veggies, fruits, and pellets. The percentage of those 3 can be debated, but I think all 3 should be in the diet.

Is she your first bird?

Agree with above, but I'd chuck in minimal good quality seed, as a foraging treat. They gotta really work for it! Mind you, different species...

HI
Her name is Rio and as far as her diet goes, Fruits veggies and nuts will be provided daily of course on top of seeds and pellets. No bird should ever be on seeds diet only.

No , I have had birds all of my life. Falcons, Crows, parrots , finches you name it.
Currently have Double yellow head amazon ( 25 years ) and I breed Gouldian Finches.
Rio is my first Macaw.

Many congrats on your new addition! What a beautiful Scarlet!! :D

I don't mean to sound critical, but I would like to point out that I hope you quarantined Rio for at least a month before getting her near your existing birds. I see your DHY is right next to Rio in the photo you attached. Quarantine is pretty important, especially if Rio came from a place that housed multiple birds. An Avian Vet check is also something that should strongly be considered - just to rule out any nasties (contagious diseases).

My own big macs get fed a large variety of foods. Here are some photos:

Choy, Sugar Snap Peas, Red Peppers, Jalapenos, Carrot, Zucchini, Broccoli, Celery, Plum & Peach.

Please don't ask me the nutritional values, as I have absolutely NO clue. :32:
