So I just bought 2 maccaws in the fall of 2013 they needed a new home its a green wing male 5 years old and blue and gold female 4 they were very bad at first biting the female was in bad shape bald chest eyes half closed I changed their diet they started talking and now I can pick them up I build them a swing they go on it act like they flying right in front of the window . Then Jan 2014 they fell in love its cute how they pet each other hug and kiss til I found a broken egg in the cage on Feb 17 2014 the egg hit bottom of the cage and broke now Mar-2-2014 they layed a second egg this time on the floor they won't leave it alone pick up their wings and feathers when:blue1: I ask them who's baby is that and they won't go back in the cage to eat I bring them food under the Dinning room table I'm not sure how to handle this whole situation I don't have a vet or was able to take them to one because I was not able to even pick them up up until now and now they got mean again with the baby its very cold outside need a lot of help how to go about things from here thanks in advance

Hi Greg!

Welcome to the forum. :)

Yikes, yikes and triple yikes about your "brooding" Macs.

I won't beat around the bush here. Breeding big macs is an enormous task and effort. I don't know if the egg(s) are fertile or not. Is she sitting on them? Is he protecting and feeding her?

Do you even WANT them to have baby chicks?

There is SO much involved and knowledge needed to successfully raise baby macaws, so I'm actually hopeful that the eggs aren't even fertile.

One last question for now: Are you 100% sure of their ages?

Thanks Wendy yes they been sitting by the egg sometimes on it they don't go back in the cage to sleep or eat when I get close they look like they trying to Chase me away they were getting very friendly said Gregory come here, the other day and now its like they not the same.. I grew up on the farm in Poland my mom had geese and chickens everytime they started laying eggs I got beat up by the geese for playing close to their house and now 30 years later the maccaws r acting the same way so I have a feeling the egg might be firtle if it is I'm gonna take a vacation and give it a good try

Brooding pair.....they will be vicious like that so it's quite normal....This can be a potential issue....There will be no way for you to check for fertility cause they will not let you near the egg period. That was one thing about nest boxes, you can kick them out and close off the entrance then check the eggs in peace.

You should be able to check for fertility in about 4-5 days. Are you able to get them away from the eggs and block them to check for fertility?

yeah i checked the first one now it has a nickle size yellow spot in the egg

You'll see blood veins if they're fertile! Give them another 4 days or so.

Wow. That is both exciting and terrifying!!!
