Big Bird _ Blue & Gold Macaw
Scared the crap out of me. Our Power went out about 2 am came on about 4:30 so I just got up headed into the kitchen to start the coffee. I walked over to the cage to check on BB and he just FELL . Landed at the corner between two perches. I reached to open the door and get him when he jumped up and hung onto the side of the cage . Staring at me like I pushed him lol. I talked to him and rubbed his tummy and head. He just sat there for a few then went back up to the top of the cage and bobbed his head like everything was fine.

He was on his new perch. I knew the dowel he was sleeping on was to small so we worked two days on a new one. I also read that a roosting perch should be big enough that the talons are 50% around it. ( now I am reading 75 %) And Yes I treated the new perch. I emailed the Avian in Durham and told him I was using Mimosa branch. Followed instructions. Scrub it with a stiff brush Soaked it in tub of water enough to cover it with two cap full of bleach. Scrub it down again good rinse and dry fully. ( its to big to put into a oven and bake .

Also busy weekend for him. New cage Friday. He was out of it a lot this weekend for the first time.

When I left for work he was eating like crazy. Fresh orange , grape and pomegranate.

I still feel bad that he fell

Poor Big Bird, I'm glad he's okay after his fall. They can scare the daylights out of you in just a heartbeat.

I bet Big Bird loves his custom mimosa perch and he's getting a brand new cage, Lucky Boy.
We want to see photos.

Hi thanks Allee. Its all I can do to stay at work LOL> just called the lady who lives next door and she went over and checked on him. He YELLED at her when she went in so guess he is ok.
I posted some pictures under the new cage thread :)

I just saw the fantastic photos of Big Bird in his great new cage. Sorry I missed that.

Haha, your poor neighbor. It sounds like BB is doing fine after his early morning accident.

I never knew that could happen. Never even read about one falling before.

Yes she is a sweet lady and I would be lost without her. She is amazed . She said she has never seen a parrot as a pet and just amazed by him.

Sounds like you startled him.

It happens every once in awhile - (especially with a CAG!)

Most of the time they just shrug it off. "Yeah. I meant to do that. I was being funny!"

They also get night frights from time to time, either from critters outside running on the fence, or wind noises, or what not... which sometimes result in falling or flapping around.

It usually isn't anything serious, and they get over it just about as quickly as they get spooked... especially if they are familiar with the phrase: "You're okay." (Incidentally, that's another one Tusk has picked up in context, and uses on people in context. Including a little girl who tripped and fell in our yard!)

LOL @ Little girl
Yes that is just what I said to him. you're ok. He never let me touch his tummy before but did this time. when he got straight he went back to the top of the cage. I stayed there and he came down hung upside down and just kept staring into my eyes then settled back down
Thanks Birdman. He did the freak out running around the cage flapping wings and yelling something I could not understand. That was Saturday . When I went to the cage I could see a squirrel in the tree outside the window. We chased him off but he kept a eye out for it the rest of the day LOL

Scary way to start a Monday

That was one of those jaw dropping moments especially for my neighbors, picture this - my CAG in a tree hanging by one foot directly over the little girl's head:

"Awww Whatsamatter? It's okay. You're okay."

THE BIRD came over to calm her down and comfort her - IN HUMANSPEAK! (And it worked!)

As for night frights - My cage doors don't close. I've got five LOOSE at night.
So when one of them gets night frights, they all take off flying in the dark... and then you have to go downstairs, and sort them out, get them calmed down, and back in their sleep spots.

We get raccoons, possums, squirrels, and cats running along the fence line. Usually it doesn't bother them. Once in awhile it happens.

:D Mine likes sneaking up behind them, and screaming. It's generally the squirrels that get spooked around here...

Trust me, this one is an audio-visual experience... I saw this one coming a mile away, and happened to have a camera at the ready. You could tell by the look in her eye she was gonna prank the squirrel! Snuck out to the end of the branch, and waited for it to sag to about tail height... THEN ARRAACCKK-AAAAAKKKK!

Cats, by the way, are a sport!

OMG to funny. Thanks a ton you brightened my day.

Sad i feel like I abandoned him when I left this morning but doubt my boss would understand I can't come in today my bird is scared and fell ........... Trust me she would believe me . The one story I gave her years ago ........ I was late because airforce 1 had to make a emergency landing before dropping me off.... she did not believe . She gave me that side ways look and I said ok ok well it sounds better than I just over slept.
I will just be glad when I am home and can see him. Serious I never ever knew one could just fall like that

So perch......... should it be 75 % or 50% as far as his talons reaching around ?

I have 3 that go the full width of the cage and then what I call short perches a concrete and a sand perch and one Dragonwood . All are close to the same radius size but the new one the largest his talons are only 50% around that one. Or does it matter at all ?

I know over kill on the perch . I plan on mounting a couple of them on the outside for him

The branch is big enough I could probably get several branches out of it.
Thanks so much!!! It was so nice that someone cut it down for me...saved me the trouble. ;)

Roscoe use to do this thing when my boyfriend comes over. I know she really dislikes him. She will hang upside down on her java perch ,and yes has fallen a few times, assuming she losses her grip. lol. I have since wrapped sisel rope on all the branches of her perch so she wont fall anymore, but yes still hangs upside down when he is over.

Yeah he fell because of me. I walked up to the cage and startled him. He must have been fast asleep. From now on I make sure to make a little noise before entering the room . I get up its still dark outside. He must have thought the boogie man was coming for him :(

I haven't yet but I did put the branch that I'm going to use closer to the house so someone else doesn't take it...like the trash guy.
