My interaction with a Hyacinth scam artist (term used loosely)

 I'm not sure whether I believe the SOB story either...but I AM actually shocked he wrote back.

GOOD FOR YOU FOR CALLING HIM OUT!!!!! BRAVO!!! :D

Haha! What?!
I'm homeless, I scam people instead of selling my laptop...!!
Who believes this? Seriously? Lol

Wow!! I vote for the latter too. Major props to you for confronting that A$$. Love Macsitna/Antiscam, clever clever. You did a great thing.

Sad that we are unable to take people at face value and must critique layer upon layer, but well worth it.

Here's the reply I just sent him:

to debora

Thanks for replying. I truly appreciate your decision to give me an honest response.

If you don't mind, I have several more questions for you. My questions are:

1. How many of these false sales have you successfully completed?

2. How often does someone actually send you money for the animals you claim to be selling?

3. How many others in Cameroon do you personally know who engage in similar scam efforts?

4. How did you become involved with and learn about this kind of deception technique?

5. Have you been conducting these scam efforts on your own? Or are you working for someone who takes part of the money you're able to obtain?

6. How long have you been involved in conducting these scam attempts?

I will greatly appreciate your answers to my above questions.

Sincere thanks,
Tony

to me

i have succeded only in one which was 250$
when you finally convince them they do send as many times as possible
so many of them
a friend intrduced me into it
i had to learn this so as to survive
no i work for the friend
i have been doing this for 4 months now
but am sorry i said i will stop this okay

Since this person seems inclined to respond, do any of you have some suggestions on where I should take it from here? Be mindful that the individual is out of US jurisdiction, so prosecution would likely not be possible. He has admitted to stealing $250 from someone, though.

There seems to be a language barrier...
.I would take it in the direction of,

She's not the only person who needs money. Yes jobs are hard to find right now, but I highly doubt she's looking... rather than sitting in front of a keyboard looking for her next victim.

Oh.. and do you know how to send a virus??? I can show you... I say this only because she needs to be shut down. :)

Anyhow... awesome work!!!

Update:

Thanks everyone for supporting my efforts :).

94lt1: Based upon the name the person gave me in the admission response, I'm assuming it's actually a male... but who knows .

Yes, I know how to infect remote computers but it's against my personal ethics to do so. Like you, though, I don't trust the individual's promise to stop perpetrating the scams.

One of my thoughts is to ask this person if he is willing to share his victim's name and contact information with me. While I seriously doubt I'd be able to convince him to do that, if he actually did do it I suppose I could share the information I have about him with the victim. I'm not sure doing so would be worthwhile, though. I'm fairly certain the victim would never be able to recover the stolen $250.

For what it's worth, and in case anyone is interested, below are my web access log hits and the IP lookup information for this scammer.

All I can tell you, Joe, is that you likely wouldn't be great CIA material. I'm a man and my name is Tony ;):D

These kind of people make me sick! I have crossed emails with them as well, I even told one I would go and pick up the birds so she gave me a fake address of a hotel lol!

I had one tell me to they would ship me a B&G from NSW a few months ago, I told them on my way back from qld I would come have a look. I knew it was a scam, I mean for $400, when there around 7-10k in AUS.
They wrote back a week later, and told me they were sorry they had to move house because his wife had died and they didn't have the money for their house, and that his son was dying and he needed the $400 for his treatment. I asked why he was selling the bird so cheap then when he could get so much more to help his son. Then he told me he had wanted the bird gone quickly because it was his wife's and it makes him sad. After telling me earlier it was his daughters bird who had moved away for college. And we'll.. We don't have college in Australia. We have universities, and people normally don't move away like they do in the US.
They make it too obvious, along with their poor spelling and grammar.
The part that caught me on quickly was when I emailed him with these questions- how old is the B&G? Had he been DNA tested? Vet checked? Ect. He didn't answer any. All he replied with was when would you like to receive the bird? What are your bank account details? Do you have somewhere to put the bird? Ect.
I only asked questions, did I really commit to buying a bird by asking questions?! Lol

I'm actually surprised this person admitted he was a scammer. While it was my goal to get him to do that, I didn't think it would be so easy.
