Parrots
BIG MIKE! He's a 10 year old green cheeked conure. Loves chewing shoelaces, stealing, long walks on the beach
I was putting my bird into his cage so I could nap, when I noticed a HUGE cut on his right nostril. Now, I say huge, because for him, it is. I have never seen this bird bleed either, and I'm a HUGE worry-wart.

The cut was a little inflamed, so I cleaned it with warm water/saline solution, used tweezers to get the feathers out of it and noticed it's not deep at all. It has stopped swelling and that is going away, and it stopped bleeding pretty quick. He doesn't pick at it and it doesn't seem like it's causing him any real discomfort, he doesn't even mind me looking at it (touching it on the other hand...)

I can't take him to or call a vet right now as it's past closing times for the vets in my area, is there any household first aid I could use on him? I don't want to wake up to find I gotta live life without my best friend

well he just regurgitated all over me and tried to mate with my head... on the plus side I am not worried anymore, just very, very disappointed in my bird's frat boy lifestyle.

I started off worried for your little guy and now I'm just laughing.
As long as he's eating, active and you're keeping an eye on him for now, sound like he should be fine.

Anything changes for the worse though then straight to the vet

FOLLOW UP! He's doing fine, there's a tiny baby bird bruise on his hurting honker so he must have hit it pretty hard :( I don't want to clean it too much, but I was wondering if there was something I could put on it to cover it to keep out crud? I don't want a petroleum product right there on his nostril, I don't want a stuffed nose or inhalation. It doesn't bleed so there's no use for the styptic powder I have, so now I guess I just watch and wait. He has a vet appointment later this week! I can ask what to do if there's a next time

Do you have an aloe plant you can squeeze the goo out of? You can rub it gently on his nose. If he manages to eat some, that's fine - it's good for them. I was also prescribed saline eye drops once when Beau's nose was swollen from a scratch (okay okay, because he was picking his nose too much, haha!). It's okay if it gets inside the nostril, but I think it was to keep the area clean more than anything. Personally think aloe is a better idea though.
