I gave my Beaks a lovely pair of extra-large whiffle balls for Christmas. I had found them at a two-dollar shop and pounced on them, thinking 'Oho! Whiffle balls the Beaks can't break!' Barney's was red and Madge's was white and they were about four inches in diameter (the whiffle balls, not the Beaks).

Notice I said 'were'?

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! What was I thinking?

Those whiffle balls (which cost all of a dollar ninety-nine each) lasted LESS THAN FIVE MINUTES! That's how long it took the destructive little toads to turn them into CONFETTI on the floor! In fact, they chewed up the whiffle balls in preference to the treats hidden inside them.

Y'can't win with birds. Y'just can't.

PS. On the other hand, if I give 'em one of those foldable toss-away cardboard drinks holders you get (free) from Macca's, they enjoy a good half-an-hour's worth of entertainment from it.

Something's not adding up here...

Wow Trish, if I did the math correctly (always questionable) that is a rate of about $48/hour! :D

Hah! Better value I found!

Today, we had 41ºC temperatures from about 10am. By 4pm, it was over 42! I sprayed the birds, hung wet towels, ran fans etc etc etc. It was HOT!!!

Just a couple of hours later, the southerly change has come through. It's a balmy 22º with a brisk wind blowing (predicted to reach gale force later tonight). ANYway, the southerly made it possible for me to toddle down the back yard and pick up a few bottlebrush branches and a handful of gum tips.

Birds are all busily munching, chomping and (in 'Setta's case) not yelling.

Price? $0.00.

Sometimes, y'can win. Sometimes...

:) :)

Will this break the terrible heat?
Of it just a 'breather' in between?

(I am having ther opposite problem here: the winter is not cold enough, so hayfever / bloody-tree-sexytime started 3 weeks ago -> 2 or 3 months ahead of their normal time)

IF I believe the Bureau of Meteorology, then yes, the heatwave is broken for the next week or two. Well, at least, the temperatures are supposed to restrain themselves to the high thirties. At least that's breathable! All my plants are turning into tea leaves and the poor wild birds are panting in the trees. We're all counting the days until autumn! :)

I don't envy you the sexy-time woes! My Rosetta is BESIDE herself with hormones, alternately rubbing her sides against the sides of her cage and screeching like banshee if I leave the room. So far, we've all been able to ignore her racket, but my poor husband believes his ears are going to bleed soon.

In the midst of all this, I've been asked to take a male Corella belonging to my daughter's ex-boss. She's about to up-chocks and travel around Australia and has considered the idea of simply opening the cage door and letting the 'native bird' go! Dear Lord! What do I do? Rosetta is using up my last drop of energy, but I simply cannot let that happen to a poor innocent bird! I suppose there's always the RSPCA, but that doesn't guarantee a good home, just a person willing to take the bird in. I hope the woman finds a decent home for the bird, but if not, then maybe 'Setta's double cage will have two tenants. :22_yikes:

whoa...Rosetta is screeming for a mate and one gets almost delivered on your doorstep... that is seriously headscratchinly pushing it.
(Is she on the internet a lot?)

I think I've found Rosetta's new boyfriend... he looks pretty tech savvy too!

Hope the cooler weather sticks around for you for a bit!

What? What? Am I being ENABLED here??? LOL!

The thing is, I don't know if the cage that will arrive tomorrow will be big enough to contain two corellas. It's 2m x 2m x 1m, same as the Beaks' cage. Also, what if they don't get along? Then, I'll be stuck with TWO yelling corellas! Certainly, the new cage has a divider down the middle and could be set up for two single apartments rather than the larger space. But I want 'Setta to be able to fly a bit and she couldn't in the half-cage.

Barney and Madge do beautifully in their cage, but they've been together since they were four months old. Also, if I did take the male bird and it didn't work out, my husband would leave me on the first available jet! He's been so kind and patient about the ongoing project that is Rosetta, but I don't think he has the saintly patience most of us bird lovers seem to possess.

I guess I'll just wait and see what happens. The woman may decide not to travel or she may find a different home for her bird. I'll just go with the flow. :)
