Hey guys,
I just picked up a BFA this afternoon who was in desperate need of a (another) new home. They tell me she's 9 years old or so, very cage aggressive (which I witnessed first hand), she doesn't step up for anything or anyone- for any reason, she's had at least 3 previous homes, and she rarely gets out of her cage due to other pets and lack of time.
I got her home, after talking to her in the car for the 2 hour drive, and set up my largest travel cage (hers is tiny and she hates it) for her while I clean her "big" cage (not big enough for an Amazon). If she didn't like something, she would move away, but none of the aggressive behavior I witnessed when she wss on her big cage when I first saw her. After about an hour, she approached me laying low making funny little noises. She was letting me pet her. I even felt comfortable enough to kiss her head (I'm not sure why, I'm really not stupid & am normally always quite cautious). This continued on and then I could "smell" her! She smells similar to my Pionus. I didn't know Amazons did that. I love that!! I did upset her when trying to use a dowel to get her in her cage. Apparently she's terrified of them. Then I tried to force her-almost, to step up on my arm. She was almost kind of growling at me. I'm honestly surprised she didn't bite me.
My flock now consists of a Blue Headed Pionus, a Yellow-sided Green Cheek Conure, a Congo African Grey, a White Capped Pionus and a Blue Front Amazon. I'm feeling pretty complete.:D But I'm sure I'll be around here with lots of questions.

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Amazons!

So, you have experienced the "Aroma of Amazona." That is very interesting and very wonderful! Amazon provide that Aroma when they are happy and at peace with the World around them. For a new owner to experience this so quickly implies that 'she' (DNA verified?) is very comfortable with you!

If she will step-up and allow you to carry her around. Take her on a tour of your home and introduce her to everything with the exception of your other Parrots.

Sadly, you really need to keep her away from your other Parrots for at least 30 days. This is standard home quarantine practice. Your new Amazon was living in a very 'stressful' place and may have pick-up something. It can happen and its just good safe practice.

Also, with normal practice, it would be wise to have her Avian Vet Examination, with a full blood screen and gram stain as base testing. Also, unless they provided the DNA document, you should confirm her sex.

READING ASSIGNMENT: Read Aloud, while sitting with your Amazon the "Understanding Body Language" Thread at the top of the Amazon Forum by Birdman666 and for your overall knowledge base of Amazons, also read the much longer Thread: I Love Amazons - ... You will find that Birdman666 Thread to be something you will want to read often over the next few months.

Enjoy!

Always Remember that Amazon's Have More Fun!

Welcome to The World of Amazon's!! And THANK YOU for taking this poor girl into your home...and heart!

There are a number of very experienced people on this awesome forum who are "owned by an Amazon"..quite a few of us having decades of experience with an Amazon.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!! feel free to ask ANY question you have! The only "dumb" question,is a question not asked! :green: ;)

And it is also required that you post MANY pictures of your 'zon/flock!

Does she have a name yet???

Thank you! Her name is Zora. I also learned, by checking her leg band, that she's about 4 years old, not 9. I'll try to post pics, but I'm rarely successful on this site posting pics.
