Dusty the Dusky Conure
For years I lived with Dusty, my Dusky at my parents house where the natural lighting in the house was much much better than it is where I live now. Dusty has always been a loud bird with a feather picking problem. When living with my mom i figured his feather picking was attributed to humidity in the house. (his feather picking began after they had taken down their fish tank that was in the same room as Dusty's cage) A humidifier helped this problem a little bit until they set the fish tank back up a year later... He still feather picked but not nearly as bad as he did when the tank wasnt there.

Then I moved...

My apartment has plenty of light, but at only certain hours of the day and due to the drafty nature of our windows his cage is on the opposite side of the apartment as our windows. His feather picking has intensified in the past year and a half that I have lived here. His chest and one leg are completely bald...

A Veterinarian i work with suggested to get a UV light for him. So I did. I have just set it up this week and I must say that although its too early to see if it is helping his feather picking, it is most definitely helping his mood. He screams less, he plays more, he even lets my boyfriend give him treats. Something i must mention about Dusty is that he HATES men. If you are male and you go anywhere near him he will try to attack you. For years my boyfriend has tried to become friends with him to no avail. Until I bought the UV light. Now my boyfriend came come near Dusty with "peace offerings" without the fear f being attacked. We are far away from my boyfriend being able to handle him, but at least there is a mutual peace between the two of them.

As time goes by with this light I will update you. I hope to hear all of your UV light experiences.

Thanks!

It goes back to full spectrum lighting, you can find what's been discussed prior throughout the years under search option within the forum. Same topic was discussed yesterday. The lighting have no value to them. It's really no different then putting up fluorescent lighting for your bird. That's what I do and it makes them happy!!!
