Hi there I'm newto Amazon world
My double yellow headed yawning alot I just got her she is sweet and 8 months old just want to know if this normal or there is something as I read it could be deficienty of vitamin A any help here will be great
Thanks

Yawning or adjusting her crop?

If adjusting her crop, it's normal to do it maybe once or twice, but not repeatedly. If she's adjusting her crop all the time, you should bring her to an Avian vet - she might have something caught in her throat or an infection in her crop.

If yawning, how much sleep is she getting and how much activity time is she getting? Yawning is normal to a certain extent.

It's her first night I will keep watching her the next 24 hrs if she kept doing that I will take her to the vet
She is very active and she slept around 5-6 hrs only
Thanks for the help

Parrots need 10-12 hours of sleep every night. Quiet, dark and hopefully uninterrupted sleep. Try to start this practice now.

And Welcome to the wonderful world of Amazon ownership. Please go to our Amazon subforum and read both of the stickies at the top of the page. Read them out loud to your new baby, Amazons love to be read to. These posts are like the Bible for Amazon parronts. An we love pics here, love to see your new baby.

Great advice provided above...

If you are in the cool to cold, kind of Great 'White' North this year, it is very possible that the low Humidity could also be part of the cause. Low Humidity will result in the crop being drier and the process of moving its contents a bit more difficult.

It is just a likely you have not or missed seeing this common tool of Parrots.

Now, our DYH Amazon loves to get into Yawning Wars to see who can yawn the longest. And, our much older Bugger can out yawn me most of the time.

FYI: At some point, you will come to know that you are in fact Owned By An Amazon!

Cheers...

I agree. My Sam does it much more in the dry winter. I guess the pellets kind of ball up in the crop and must be "moved along". LOL

If you are worried about vitamins, do not try to supplement without having first run a vitamin blood panel to verify. Then do so only under the close supervision of a certified avian vet---exotics vets often say/do things that are not good advice for birds (because they basically only take a few (if that many) classes on birds during veterinary school. I have gotten some really poor advice from exotics vets (even those who have a lot of other bird patients). If that is your only option, do what you have to do, but just remember that a CAV is going to be a much safer choice.

A new bird is going to be stressed out anyway so sometimes they do act a bit sleepy etc. That having been said, stress can make them more prone to illness, so take it for what it's worth.
