My african grey has just chewed a card of laxatives what should I do?

I really did not have access to help or advice I didn't realise people would be so judgemental, it's not helpful. These things happen to everyone and If you knew the history of Billy you would understand just what a handful he is, he is my late father's bird and when my father developed Alzheimer's he was just allowed to do whatever he wanted to. You'd should never judge without knowing the other persons circumstances. it's very discouraging, however, I was glad to read about keeping Billy hydrated that Was helpful.

Didn't mean to offend, but it is the internet.

People send us fake stories all the time just to rile folks up. Then they disappear. After awhile you become cynical and suspicious of unusual things like this.

Guilty as charged. Consider me sufficiently, and dutifully chastized. I still responded to it. And this was not directed at you per se, but there are a fair number of people who try and substitute bird chat room advice for medical emergencies... and it's one of those things that gets to me. I am not a vet. I can only make "educated guesses."

Glad your bird is okay. That's kinda what I figured would happen.

Aw I'm so glad he is better and I wouldn't take what people said to heart

Glad to have read this follow up post... when I saw the initial post about why going to a blog first, I can think of a bunch of reasons why. If something happened to my Tango at 2AM *knock on wood*, there are no avian vets anywhere within a 6 hour radius so the only solution I have would be to come on here and hope I find answers until the morning. And this is a global community so we have people with all kinds of different timezones, live in rural areas with no immediate transportation or access to services, etc. Then you have some that simply can't afford it... people in the US seem have it pretty easy with pricing compared to what's offered around me here in Montreal. Simple procedures that cost $50 or so seem to cost triple or quadruple that here. (When my rattie had a mammary tumor, people on the forums were telling me prices from $60 - $150 and they were all in the US. I checked with the only two exotic vets in the city that operated on rats and one wanted $500 and the other $650.) I know you shouldn't have a pet if you can't afford it, put everyone needs or wants companionship, even people that can't afford a $1000 medical bill.

Anyhow, I've had a poopy day and I'm cranky, so I'm off to head home and get some kisses from Tango :)

Dan

*Edit -Oh and yes I acknowledge that you're right that there are some ppl that think a forum or a self-diagnosis website is a *replacement* for a an actual doctor's visit, which is completely false. Just have to be careful not to try and judge who's who too quickly I guess.

That was a really good post Dan! :)

...and I'm glad to see Billy is okay ;) Like people said, no one means any harm, but like Birdman said, some people "troll" forums for a reaction, and the moderators are especially watchful of it. I guess it was just such an unusual thing to hear, but again, glad all is well!
